Picture a Saturday morning in the Marina: every surface bay taken, the multi-storey ramp tight, and you only need to grab a coffee and a parcel. Who the 500 actually suits

This is a one or two person car. Up front it's roomy enough, with a high seating position and good headroom for a car this short. The back is the catch. The rear bench is fine for a child seat or a short hop with a friend, but two grown adults behind two grown adults for any real distance is a squeeze nobody enjoys. If your trip is solo commuting, a couple doing brunch and beach runs, or one person darting between meetings, the 500 fits the brief better than almost anything. For a family of four with cases, size up to a normal supermini like a Grand i10 or a Picanto and you'll thank yourself.

Be honest with yourself before you book. The boot is 185 litres, which in practice means one medium suitcase and a backpack, or a couple of soft holdalls and the weekly shop. A single large hard case will eat the whole space and still need the parcel shelf out. Drop the 50/50 rear seats and you free up 550 litres, plenty for an IKEA run or a paddleboard bag, but then you've lost your back seats. For an airport pickup with two people and two big cases, the 500 is the wrong tool. For one traveller and a carry-on plus a duffel, it's genuinely fine.

Parking and the daily drive

Here's where the 500 earns its keep. At just over 3.5 metres long, it slots into bays that leave SUVs circling, and the tight turning circle makes Marina basements and U-turns easy. Speed bumps and mall ramps are no drama at city speeds. Around the neighbourhood and on errands it's light, nippy and easy to thread through traffic, which is exactly the job most renters give it.

The 1.2 petrol pulls cleanly up to about 80 km/h. On Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11 it'll cruise at 100 to 120 quite happily once it's up to speed, but the 69 horsepower means overtaking takes planning, and a strong headwind or a full car makes it work. There's no hiding that 0 to 100 takes nearly 13 seconds. Treat it as a city car that can do the occasional highway stint, not a highway car, and you'll never be frustrated.

Heat, fuel and the running costs you'll actually notice

The cabin is small, which is the one real summer advantage of a car like this. When it's 45 degrees and the car has been baking in a surface lot, a small volume of air cools faster than a big SUV's, so the front vents bring the temperature down quickly once you're moving. There are no rear air vents, but with only the two front seats really in use that rarely matters. Park in shade where you can, because no compact car's AC enjoys a glass roof in direct July sun if your 500 has one.

On fuel it's frugal. Around 5.1 litres per 100km combined and a 35-litre tank give you something close to 650 km between fills in mixed driving, and in pure city stop-start you'll still go most of a week on a tank. That's one of the cheapest cars in our fleet to keep moving.

Two Dubai admin notes. Salik tolls run on the renter's account, and any RTA speed or parking fine passes through to you as well. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat. None of this is unique to the 500, but on a budget rental the tolls are worth watching.

Our recommendation

Rent the Fiat 500 2023 if you're one or two people who value character and want the simplest parking and lowest fuel bill in Dubai. It's the right call for a solo commuter, a couple on a city break, or a young driver who can't rent much else at 18. Skip it if you're carrying four adults, doing regular airport runs with big luggage, or spending most of your week at highway speed. For those trips, a full-size supermini or a small sedan costs little more and saves you the compromises. Used for what it's good at, the 500 is one of the most likeable small cars we hand over.
