Few small cars get looked at the way this one does. We hand over the Fiat 500 2023 in Dubai with payment sorted however suits you on the spot, cards, cash, or your phone wallet, so the only thing you're deciding is which way to point that cheerful round face. This is the design icon of the city-car world, a retro shape that's barely changed because it never needed to, and people rent it for the look as much as the drive. That's the honest argument here. The 500 is a style statement you can park anywhere, fun for one or two, and a stretch the moment you ask it to be a proper family hatch.
The 500's whole appeal sits on the surface, and that's not a criticism. The rounded body, the chrome-ringed badge, the friendly headlamps and the colour-matched dash all read as deliberate. It photographs well outside a cafe in City Walk and it suits a weekend pottering between brunch and the beach. If you want a rental that feels like an accessory rather than appliance, this is the one in the economy bracket that delivers it.
The cabin carries the same idea. The body-coloured panel across the dashboard, the chunky single dial, the small leather wheel, it all feels styled rather than stripped-out. It's a nice place to spend twenty minutes crossing town. Just know the charm is the point, and the practicality comes second.
The petrol 500 runs a 1.2-litre four-cylinder making 69 hp through the front wheels. That tells you most of what you need: this is a light, willing town car, not a fast one.
| Spec | Fiat 500 1.2 |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.2-litre petrol, 4-cylinder |
| Power | 69 hp |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Seats | 4 |
| Boot | 185 litres |
| Fuel tank | 35 litres |
| Fuel economy | About 5.1 L/100km combined |
| Range | Roughly 650 km on a tank |
| Top speed | 160 km/h |
| 0 to 100 km/h | About 12.9 seconds |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 3571 x 1627 x 1488 mm |
| Ground clearance | 105 mm |
| Colours | Subject to availability |
Read those numbers as a city brief. Under three and a half metres long, it slips into bays nothing else fits. The 35-litre tank paired with real-world economy in the low fives means a week of errands rarely has you at the pump more than once, which is part of why it's an easy car to live with day to day.
The 500 technically lists four seats, and the front two are genuinely comfortable. The back is where honesty matters. Those rear seats suit kids or a short hop with friends, not two adults across town in summer. Anyone over average height behind a tall driver will be folded in.
The boot is 185 litres, which is small even by city-car standards. One large suitcase fills it, or a couple of soft bags and the shopping. Fold the rear bench and you free up real space, but then you're back to two seats. So picture the trip before you book. Two people and cabin bags for an airport run, fine. A family of four with full luggage from the terminal, look at a normal hatch or a small sedan instead. The 500 will not pretend to be bigger than it is.
The upside of a small cabin in a Dubai July is that there's very little air to cool. Park the 500 in the sun and the surfaces still bake, but the AC clears the worst of it quickly once you're moving, faster than you'd get in anything roomier. There are front vents only, no rear outlets, which barely matters when the back seat is rarely full. For two up front it stays comfortable even when the dash thermometer reads in the high 40s.
This is the 500's home ground. The tight bays in Marina towers, the squeezed mall levels, the U-turn you'd hesitate to attempt in something larger, it shrugs at all of it. The short body and light steering make multi-storey parking genuinely easy, and 105 mm of clearance is enough for the city's speed bumps if you take the steep ramps gently.
On the open road the picture changes. The 500 holds 100 to 120 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road without fuss, but it's a 69 hp car, so overtaking takes planning and a long highway run feels busier than it would in a bigger engine. It's happiest under that pace. A few practical points apply to any rental here: Salik tolls run on your account, RTA fines pass to you, and seatbelts are required in every seat.
Rent the Fiat 500 if you're one or two people who want a stylish, fun little car for cruising around town and you'll take the looks over the legroom. For that brief it's one of the most characterful cars at this price in Dubai. If you're carrying four adults, doing regular airport runs with full luggage, or spending most of your week on the highway, skip it and size up to a standard hatch or compact sedan. The 500 knows exactly what it is, and it's better to rent it for that than against it.
