It's a five-seat hatchback on paper, but it's really built for one or two people running a tight budget through a Dubai week, not a group with airport suitcases. What you get for the money

The Spark runs a 1.4-litre four making 98 hp through a CVT automatic and front-wheel drive. It's not a car you buy for the drivetrain. It's a car you buy because the drivetrain is cheap to feed and simple to maintain, and Chevrolet built it to shuttle people around a city, not to impress on a spec sheet. Around town and on Sheikh Zayed Road at legal speed it keeps up fine. Ask it for a full-throttle overtake with a passenger aboard and the CVT holds higher revs while the car gathers speed gradually rather than snapping forward. It gets there, just without urgency, and if regular high-speed passing above 100 is part of your week, this isn't the car for it.

The small cabin works in the Spark's favor once the sun's involved. There's little air to cool, so the single-zone manual AC drops a baking parked interior to comfortable faster than it would in a bigger car. Don't expect rear vents at this end of the fleet, so back-seat air comes from whatever drifts back off the front vents. Crack a window for the first half minute after you climb back in from a hot car park, then let the AC catch up.

Room for people and bags

At 3,636 mm long and 1,597 mm wide, the Spark is one of the smallest things we rent, smaller than most economy hatchbacks and noticeably shorter than a Toyota Yaris. That footprint is what makes it easy in a cramped Marina tower bay, a tight multi-storey at the mall, or a kerbside gap on a residential street where a bigger sedan needs two attempts to fit. Low-speed manoeuvres, U-turns and speed bumps are all non-events in something this compact.

Five seats are fitted, and up front two adults sit fine for the size of car. The back bench holds two adults for a short hop, but legroom disappears past twenty minutes, and a third person across the middle really only works for a child. The boot takes 314 litres, enough for one large suitcase and a soft bag, not more, though folding the rear seats down opens up real space for a supermarket run if you're not carrying passengers back there. Plan on this car for one or two people and modest luggage. Four adults with real bags for an airport run isn't what it's for.

The mileage deal, and what it's worth

Here's where the Spark earns its keep beyond the low daily rate. For someone doing errands, commuting and the odd cross-town trip, that's not a number you need to watch closely.

With a 35-litre tank and a realistic 12 to 13 km/L in city traffic with the AC working, you're looking at roughly two weeks between fill-ups for typical driving, sometimes closer to three if you're mostly local. Two costs stay with you regardless of the car: Salik every time your route crosses a toll gate, and any RTA fine picked up during the rental period. Neither is specific to the Spark, but on a car this cheap to run, they're the two line items that can actually move your total.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Book the Chevrolet Spark 2020 if you're one or two people covering a Dubai week or longer on errands, commuting and short hops, and the priority is keeping costs down without renting something you can't park. Minimum age to rent is 22, and at this price, with mileage this generous and overage this cheap, it's genuinely hard to beat for a solo resident or a budget-minded couple.

Size up if your trip means four adults with real luggage, a lot of sustained highway driving at pace, or regular need for rear legroom that fits adults rather than kids. A compact sedan or small crossover from the fleet costs more to run but gives that back in space and a calmer highway feel.
