The Spark carries a 1.4-litre four making a modest 98 hp, paired with a CVT automatic and front-wheel drive. It's not fast, and it's not meant to be. The point is running cost: Chevrolet quotes fuel economy near 19 to 20 km per litre, and while no car hits its lab number in real Dubai traffic with the AC working overtime, 12 to 13 km/L is a realistic week-to-week figure. With a 35-litre tank, that's easily two weeks of city driving, sometimes closer to three, between fill-ups.

Space, boot and passengers

It slots into a cramped Marina tower bay, a tight mall multi-storey, or a kerbside gap on a residential street that a mid-size sedan has to reverse into twice. Speed bumps and shallow ramps aren't a concern at low speed. Just treat it gently on anything rougher, since a car this compact doesn't have SUV-style clearance to spare.

The boot holds 314 litres, enough for one large suitcase and a couple of soft bags, not more. Folding the rear seats down frees up real space for a supermarket run or a flat-pack delivery, but you give up the back seat to do it. Five seats are fitted, and up front two adults sit comfortably enough for the size of the car. In the back, two adults manage a short hop, but knee room disappears on anything past twenty minutes, and a third across the bench really only works for kids. If your week means four adults with real luggage for an airport run, this car won't do it.

A small engine and the AC in the heat

Ninety-eight horsepower and a CVT are enough for the roads this car's built for: signalised city streets, the odd stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road at legal speed, short hops to the Marina or Downtown. Merge onto E11 and you'll keep pace with traffic, but a full-throttle overtake with two people aboard has the CVT holding higher revs while the car slowly gathers speed. It gets there. It's just not the car for confident high-speed passing above 100, and if that's a regular part of your week, size up.

The small cabin actually works in the Spark's favor in July and August. There isn't much air to cool, so single-zone manual AC pulls a parked, sun-baked interior down to comfortable faster than it would in a bigger car. There are no rear vents, standard at this end of the fleet, so back-seat passengers rely on airflow reaching them from the front. Crack a window for the first thirty seconds after you climb back in from a hot car park, then let the AC take over.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Book the Chevrolet Spark 2020 if you're one or two people running a Dubai week on errands, commuting and short trips, and you want the lowest fuel bill and the easiest car to park on the fleet. Minimum age to rent is 25, and at that price point it's hard to beat for a solo resident or a couple who don't need to carry much.
