Hand the keys of a 1.0-litre automatic to someone doing a week of grocery runs and a short daily commute, and the maths does the talking. We rent the Chevrolet Spark 2020 in Dubai with the no-deposit option, so the cheapest sensible city automatic on our lot ties up none of your cash up front. That's the whole case for this car. It's a five-door economy hatchback built for one or two people running errands, parking in tight bays, and keeping fuel spend close to nothing. Ask it to do more than that, four adults, airport cases, long highway stints, and it starts to show its limits. This page is about whether those limits matter for your week.
Think short hops. The school run, the supermarket, a drive to the office and back, the odd dinner across town. For that pattern the Spark is hard to beat on cost, because the 1.0-litre engine sips fuel and the automatic gearbox takes the strain out of stop-and-go traffic on roads like Al Wasl or Jumeirah Beach Road.
The honest counterweight is the engine size. With 75 horsepower pulling a light body, the Spark is fine up to about 100 km/h. Past that, on Sheikh Zayed Road or the E11, you'll notice it. Overtaking a truck takes planning, not a flick of the right foot, and the cabin gets buzzy at sustained speed. If most of your week is highway cruising or regular runs out to Abu Dhabi, this isn't your car. Size up to a Picanto or a Grand i10 and you'll get the extra puff for not much more.
This is where small-car honesty matters. The Spark's boot takes one large suitcase plus a soft bag, or two cabin cases with room to spare. That's genuinely enough for a couple on a city break or a single traveller.
For an airport run with the family, it isn't. Drop the rear seats and you free up real space for a flat-pack from the mall or a week's bulk shopping, but you can't have both passengers and that cargo at once. Two adults, two small kids and their bags will manage for in-town trips. Add a third adult or full-size cases and you're over the car's natural limit.
The reason people pick the Spark is sitting in the fuel column. The 1.0-litre returns roughly 5.5 litres per 100 km in mixed Dubai driving, and the 35-litre tank gives a real-world range comfortably north of 500 km. For a normal week of errands and a short commute, expect to fill up once, maybe not at all. Petrol here is cheap to begin with, so a car this frugal makes the running cost almost an afterthought.

Read the table as reference, not a verdict. The numbers that decide your rental are the economy figure and the boot, and we've covered both above. The rest is context.
A small cabin is the Spark's quiet advantage in a Dubai summer. When the car has been baking in a car park and the dash reads 45 outside, there's simply less air to cool. The AC pulls the cabin down quickly because the volume is small, and the front vents are strong enough to make the first few minutes bearable rather than punishing. There are no rear vents, but in a car this size the cold air reaches the back seat anyway. Park in shade where you can, crack the windows for the first thirty seconds, and the AC catches up fast.
Around town the Spark is in its element. It's short and narrow, so the multi-storey bays that defeat bigger cars are easy, U-turns are tight, and you'll slot into gaps others drive past. Speed bumps and standard mall ramps clear without drama on the car's clearance, though you should still take steep entries slowly.
A few practical points. Salik tolls are billed to the renter, so factor the gates on your route. RTA fines pass to you as well, and seat belts are mandatory in every seat, with child seats required for under-fours. None of this is unusual, but it's your responsibility once the car is delivered.
Rent the Spark 2020 if you're one or two people, your week is city errands and a short commute, and you want the lowest running cost we offer with no deposit holding your money. For that job it's the smart, unsentimental pick.
Skip it if you'll spend real time above 100 km/h, need to carry four adults with luggage, or want a quiet highway cruiser for airport and intercity runs. In those cases a Picanto, a Grand i10 or a small sedan earns its slightly higher rate. The Spark is the cheapest car that still makes sense for city life. Match it to that life and it's exactly enough.
