The BMW X4 2024 is the SUV you rent in Dubai when you want the height and presence of an X3 but with a roofline that looks like it's already moving. That sloping coupe roof is the whole personality of this car, and it's also the thing you need to think about before you book. The X4 trades a bit of practicality for looks, and whether that's a good deal depends entirely on what you're carrying and who's sitting behind you.

The coupe roof, and what it costs you

The X4 is basically an X3 with the rear end pulled down into a fastback. From the front seats you'd never know the difference. The driving position is high, the dash is the familiar BMW layout with a wide curved display, and the materials are what you expect from the badge at this price. Two adults up front have all the room in the world.

The back is where the roofline shows up. Headroom behind is tighter than the upright X3, so a tall adult will feel the glass close to their head on a longer drive. For kids or for two adults on a city hop it's fine. For three grown adults across the rear seat on an airport run, this isn't the car. The X4 is built for people who like the look and rarely fill the back, not for maximising heads and luggage.

Engine and how it drives

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbo four with mild-hybrid assistance, making 252 hp through an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. It'll do 0 to 100 in 6.3 seconds, which is genuinely quick for a family-shaped SUV. On Sheikh Zayed Road it has the punch to slot into a gap and stay there at 120 without the engine working hard. Around town the gearbox is smooth and the hybrid system smooths out the stop-start crawl.

The 65-litre tank with a combined figure around 7.2 litres per 100 km means you're not living at the pump. Real Dubai driving with the AC fighting the heat will push that higher, into the eights in heavy city use, but you'll still get most of a week of normal running before you think about filling up. A couple of DXB or DWC runs won't dent it badly.

Luggage, and the honest boot story

The boot holds 525 litres, rising to 1430 with the rear seats down. On paper that's competitive, but the sloped tailgate eats into how you can stack things. Soft bags and normal suitcases load fine. A tall, square box or a stack of hard cases up to the roofline is where the shape fights you. Two people with a large case each plus weekend bags will be comfortable. A family of four packing for a full week should fold one side of the rear seats or accept that the X4 is the wrong tool and look at an upright SUV.

Parking, ramps and the heat

At 4.75 metres the X4 is easy enough to place in Marina bays and mall car parks, helped by the high seat and good cameras. The 204 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and the steep lips on mall ramps without you holding your breath, so this is one of the more relaxed cars to drive over the city's bumps.

Cooling matters here from May to September. Parked in 45-degree sun the cabin bakes like any car, and the X4 pulls it back down quickly once you're moving. The front vents hit hard and there are rear outlets, so passengers in the back aren't left to suffer while the front cools first. Give it a minute with the doors shut and it's comfortable.

A note on costs that fall to you: Salik tolls are charged to the renter as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental are yours. A child under four needs a child seat by law, and we'll fit one on request.

Who should rent it
