The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace 2024 earns its keep on the boring stuff: the weekly shop, the school run, the 6am drop at DXB with three cases in the back. It isn't a dune car and doesn't pretend to be. We rent it to drivers from 18, which most Dubai desks won't do, and deliver it to your door in an hour or two. What a week of it costs to run

The engine is a 1.4-litre turbo petrol making 150 hp, which sounds modest for a car this long and mostly isn't. Around town the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox keeps it in the useful part of the rev range, and the 250 Nm arrives early enough that you never feel like you're dragging the body around behind you. Where the size does show up is a hard overtake at 120 on the E11 with five people aboard. It gets there, but you plan the move rather than just squeezing the pedal.

The payoff is at the pump. The claimed combined figure is 6.3 litres per 100 km, and in real Dubai use, meaning the air conditioning on full and a lot of stop-start, we'd budget closer to 8. On a 58-litre tank that still works out to roughly 650 to 700 km of mixed driving, so most renters fill once in a week and stop thinking about it. Two costs sit outside the rate. Salik tolls run on your account for the duration of the rental, and any RTA fine issued during the booking passes to you. Five seats, and what fits behind them

We have to be straight about this, because the badge misleads people. The Allspace body is the long-wheelbase Tiguan, and Volkswagen sells it with an optional third row. The car on this listing is the five-seat layout. If you're booking for seven people, this isn't the right car, and you shouldn't turn up at delivery hoping for a surprise back row.

What you get instead is one of the better boots in this part of the market: 760 litres with all five seats in use, opening to around 1,775 with the rear bench folded flat. In practice that's four large suitcases standing upright with room left over for soft bags, which is exactly the airport run a compact crossover can't do. Anyone who has had a T-Roc for a week and ended up stacking cases across the back seat already knows what they're paying the extra for here.

Rear legroom is the other dividend of the long wheelbase. Three adults across the back on a 40-minute run out to DWC is genuinely comfortable rather than merely survivable.

The size costs you a little in the multi-storey. At 4,728 mm this isn't a car you swing into a tight Marina bay without a glance at the camera. The 201 mm of ground clearance is the compensation, and it's a real one. Dubai's steeper mall ramps and the aggressive speed bumps that make a low sedan driver wince are a non-event in this thing.

Cooling it down in July

A big cabin takes longer to cool than a small one, and no amount of German engineering gets around that at 45 degrees. Parked in the sun for a few hours, expect two or three minutes with the fan up before it feels civilised, and drop the windows for the first half-minute to push the worst of the hot air out rather than recirculating it. Rear passengers get their own vents, which counts for more here than in a compact SUV simply because there's more distance between them and the dashboard. If you're travelling with a child under four, the law requires a proper child seat, and it's far easier to fit one before the car has been sitting in the sun than after.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you need seven seats. This one has five, and no booking note changes that.

Skip it too if your week is mostly solo commuting and short errands. You'd be paying for length you never use and parking a car that's bigger than the job needs. A T-Roc or a Golf handles that week for less money and slots into tighter bays.

And skip it if the plan involves soft sand. The 1.4 drives the front wheels only, and no amount of ground clearance turns a front-drive crossover into a dune car. Graded desert tracks and the road up to Hatta are well within it. Anything softer than that wants a proper 4x4 with low range.

Rent it if you're a couple or a family of four or five with real luggage, doing airport runs and long weekends alongside the normal city routine. A compact-car fuel bill attached to a boot that genuinely swallows a family's cases is a hard combination to find in Dubai at this size, and the Allspace is the car that does it.
