For the money, few things you can rent in Dubai give a big family as much usable room as a Volkswagen Teramont 2022. This is a full three-row, seven-seat SUV, and unlike a lot of its rivals the third row and the boot are both genuinely useful rather than there to pad a brochure. What the 2.0 turbo does, and running cost

The engine surprises people. This is the 2.0-litre turbo four, not the 3.6 V6 that's also sold here, and on paper 220 hp to haul a five-metre SUV sounds light. In practice the turbo's 350 Nm arrives early, so it pulls onto Sheikh Zayed Road without fuss and gets to 100 in about 8.3 seconds. Fully loaded with a family and their bags you'll feel it working harder on a long uphill overtake, but for normal Dubai driving there's enough here and you won't wish for the V6. The 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly and the all-wheel-drive system keeps things planted in summer rain.

Fuel is the honest trade for the size. Volkswagen's combined figure sits near 9 litres per 100 km, which is a lab number. A big SUV in Dubai stop-and-go with the AC flat out is realistically closer to 11 or 12. The 70-litre tank still gives a healthy range between fills, so a normal week of school runs and mall trips means the odd visit to the pump rather than a daily one.

On mileage, this rental includes 4,500 km over the rental, with extra kilometres at AED 1 each. That's a generous allowance that covers city family life and a run out to Abu Dhabi or Al Ain without much thought. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the hire pass to you, as they do with every car we hand over, and child seats are required for under-fours. You'll need to be 21 to take the keys.

Cooling three rows in July

Dubai summers push into the high 40s, and a cabin this big is only as good as its air. The Teramont has a lot of volume to chill after a few hours parked in an open car park, so the first minute or two won't be instant. What saves it is the rear ducting. There are vents feeding the second and third rows, which means the kids in the back get real cold air rather than whatever's left over from the dash. Start it, let it run a couple of minutes before everyone piles in, park in shade or a basement where you can, and the heat stops being a talking point.

Who should rent it, and who should look at a Prado or Explorer

Rent the Teramont if you're a big family or a group that actually fills the seats and the boot. This is where it earns its rate: three usable rows, a real airport load behind them, highway comfort for the long runs, and a lot of that for less than the big body-on-frame names cost to hire. For weeks that are all city driving, airport pickups and the occasional trip up the coast, it's an easy, roomy call.

Two honest limits before you book. The all-wheel drive helps with grip and wet roads, but this is a road SUV, not a desert tool. With 203 mm of clearance and no low-range gearing, it clears speed bumps and mall ramps happily but has no business in soft sand. If your week genuinely involves dune tracks or rough off-road, look at a Toyota Prado, which is built for exactly that. And at over five metres long and nearly two metres wide, it asks for patience and the cameras in tight multi-storey bays, so a Ford Explorer or a smaller crossover is easier to place if you rarely need all seven seats.
