Hand the keys of a Toyota Yaris 2025 to an 18-year-old in Dubai and nothing dramatic happens, which is exactly the point. We rent this small Toyota from age 18 when most of the market makes you wait until 21, and it suits that first solo year on the road better than almost anything else we keep. The argument for the Yaris is dull in the best way. It starts every morning, sips fuel, costs little to run, and asks nothing of the person driving it. If you want a dependable daily that won't surprise you, this is the small sedan to take. The only real question is whether you ever need more than it gives.
Reliability is the whole pitch here. The Yaris uses a simple 1.5-litre petrol engine and an automatic gearbox that Toyota has built in some form for years, so there's very little on it to go wrong over a long rental. That matters more than it sounds. A car you keep for a month or a season is a car you don't want to think about, and the Yaris rewards that. It's the kind of small Toyota people hand down to a new driver precisely because it tolerates mistakes and keeps going.
Running cost is the other half. A 40-litre tank and economy in the high teens of kilometres per litre means a week of normal city driving rarely needs more than one fill. On a mix of errands, commuting, and the odd longer run, you'll visit a petrol station far less than you'd expect. For anyone watching what a car costs to feed, that adds up fast across a long booking.
The 1.5-litre makes 106 horsepower through the front wheels, and in the city that's plenty. Off the line and through traffic the Yaris feels light and willing, and the automatic shifts smoothly enough that stop-and-go on a school run or a supermarket trip never gets tiring.
Where you feel the limits is speed. Get it onto Sheikh Zayed Road and the Yaris cruises fine at 100 to 120, but it asks for a long, deliberate run-up to overtake confidently, and at the top of the legal limit the engine is working. It's honest, not gutless. If most of your week is highway miles at pace with three passengers aboard, you'll want something with more under the bonnet. For a daily that's mostly city with the occasional motorway stretch, the Yaris has enough.
A small cabin has one genuine advantage in a Dubai summer: there's less air to cool. Park the Yaris in the sun at 45 degrees, start it, and the front vents bring the temperature down quickly, faster than a big saloon manages. There are no rear air vents, so back-seat passengers rely on the front pushing cool air through, which is fine for two kids and worth knowing if you regularly carry adults behind.
Parking is where the Yaris quietly earns its keep. It's a compact sedan, easy to thread into tight multi-storey bays and simple to reverse into the kind of bay where bigger cars give up. Ground clearance is 175 mm, enough to clear speed bumps and mall ramps without the scrape you get in lower cars.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Economy sedan |
| Seats | 5 |
| Engine | 1.5-litre petrol |
| Power | 106 hp |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Fuel tank | 40 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4425 x 1740 x 1480 mm |
| Ground clearance | 175 mm |
| Boot | 475 litres |
| Colour | White |
The boot holds 475 litres, which is generous for a car this size. Two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags go in without folding the rear seats, so an airport run to or from DXB or DWC for a couple of travellers is no trouble. Add a third large case and you'll start using the back seat for the overflow.
On fuel, the 40-litre tank paired with the Yaris's economy gives real range. Across a normal week of city driving you're realistically looking at one fill, maybe a top-up if you've done a few longer trips. That's the practical reason this car suits a budget commuter: less time at the pump and less money through it.
Two Dubai running notes apply to any rental, and they apply here. Salik tolls go on your account as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental are yours to settle, so keep an eye on speed cameras. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, front and back.
Rent the Yaris if you're a new or younger driver wanting a stress-free first car, or anyone after the cheapest dependable small automatic for weeks of city driving. It's ideal for one or two people, light on fuel, easy to park, and built to be forgotten about in the good way. For a single commuter or a couple doing mostly urban miles, nothing in this class is easier to live with.
Step up if your week looks different. Four adults travelling regularly, a lot of fast highway driving, or a need for more rear-seat room and overtaking punch all point to a Corolla instead. It costs a little more to rent and run, but it gives you the space and pace the Yaris deliberately leaves out. Match the car to how you'll actually drive, and the Yaris is the smart, low-cost choice for the city driver who values not having to think about it.
