Toyota Yaris 2023 - start from 126 AED / day

Toyota's reputation for running trouble-free is exactly why the Toyota Yaris Cross 2023 shows up so often on our Dubai fleet. It shares its 1.5-litre engine with the Yaris sedan, just wrapped in a taller, five-door crossover body that sits higher and swallows more luggage. We get it to your door in one to two hours, so you skip the rental counter altogether. The real question this page answers is simple: does the extra height and space over a sedan cost you anything across a week of Dubai driving, or is it close to a free upgrade.

What a week of it costs to run

The Yaris Cross runs a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four making 106 hp and 138 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a D-CVT, Toyota's dual-mode CVT that behaves more like a normal automatic than the rubber-band feel some CVTs have at low speed. It's not a quick car, and it isn't meant to be. Combined fuel economy sits close to 5.9 litres per 100 km on paper. Dubai traffic and a full-time AC compressor push that up, so plan on nearer 7.5 in real use, which is still light for a car this size.

The tank holds 42 litres, good for roughly 550 to 600 km of city driving before you need to find a station, so a normal week of commuting and errands means one stop at the pump.

Mileage matters more than fuel here. The daily allowance is 250 km, which covers a working week and the weekend shop without issue. Go past it and it's AED 0.5 per extra km, so factor that in if you're planning a run out to Hatta or Al Ain and back. Salik tolls and any RTA fines land on the renter, as with every car we rent out, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys.

Space, boot and passengers

This is where the Cross earns its name over the regular Yaris. The boot holds 397 litres, enough for two large suitcases and a carry-on for a DXB or DWC run without folding the rear seats, something the sedan's smaller boot opening struggles with once cases get wide. Drop the 60/40 split rear seats and there's room for flatpack furniture or a couple of bikes.

Up front, two adults get a proper crossover seating position, higher than the sedan and easier to climb in and out of when you're loading kids or shopping. The back seat takes two adults comfortably on a normal trip, or three children across for the school run. Put a fourth adult back there with everyone's luggage for an airport transfer and legroom gets tight, which is the honest limit of a car this size.

At 4.3 metres long and 1.77 metres wide, it slots into tight mall bays and tower parking the same as any small hatch, and the 210 mm of ground clearance shrugs off speed bumps and steep basement ramps that scrape lower cars. Read that clearance as parking convenience, not an invitation to try soft sand. It's front-wheel drive on road tyres, built for tarmac.

A small engine and the AC in the heat

106 hp moves the Yaris Cross around town without drama, and the D-CVT keeps the engine from droning the way some rivals' CVTs do under hard acceleration. On Sheikh Zayed Road it holds highway speed fine and has enough left for normal overtaking, but above 100 km/h with the AC working hard and a couple of passengers aboard, don't expect much urgency. It's built for the school run and the mall, not for hustling up an on-ramp.

The AC is what actually gets tested here in July and August. The cabin is small enough that the compressor pulls it down from a baking 45-plus degrees reasonably fast once you climb back in, quicker than you'd get in a bigger SUV. Front vents blow strong from the first minute. Rear vent provision varies by specification on this car, so don't assume the back seat gets its own airflow. Keep it in shade when you can and it's a minor point rather than a real complaint.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the Yaris Cross if you want Toyota's dependability, a boot that handles real luggage, and a higher seating position, at running costs barely above a hatchback. It suits a couple, a small family doing the school and mall circuit, or a solo renter who wants more space than an economy sedan without paying SUV money. The 250 km daily allowance covers ordinary city life comfortably.

Size up if you're regularly carrying four adults with cases or you need real punch for fast highway overtaking. A mid-size crossover will serve you better there. And if Hatta or the dunes are on the itinerary, this front-wheel-drive city crossover isn't the tool for it. For everything else, a week of ordinary Dubai driving, it does the job without fuss and without much of a bill at the pump.
