It doesn't mean an unproven car.

Under the bonnet the numbers are the same across the generation: 409 hp and 650 Nm through a 10-speed automatic, sent to all four wheels all the time rather than only when a dial gets turned. That full-time system comes with a locking centre differential and genuine low range, plus Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control for sand and rutted tracks. On Sheikh Zayed Road it means overtaking takes a light push of the pedal, not a run-up, and 0 to 100 km/h in around 6.7 seconds is quick for something close to two and a half tonnes. It's a clear step on from the old V8 in both response and refinement.

Seven seats, and the boot trade-off that comes with them

Toyota builds the GCC Land Cruiser as a genuine seven-seater, and the middle row does most of the work. It's wide, set high enough for a clear view out, and takes two adults or three kids without anyone folded into a corner.

The third row is real seating, not a marketing footnote, which puts the Land Cruiser ahead of most rivals in the class. Be honest about what that means, though. Legroom back there is tight for adults on anything past a short hop, but it's fine for kids for a full day. Access isn't a fight, since the middle row slides forward out of the way.

Fold the third row flat and the load bay turns into a long, square space that swallows a week's luggage while still seating five. You rarely need every seat and every case on the same trip, and that's the one thing worth planning around before you book.

Fuel, tolls and how the cabin handles the heat

Stop-start city traffic with the AC working hard pushes it closer to 15 or 16, so budget for a thirsty week if most of your driving stays inside the city. The 80-litre tank still buys a decent range between fills.
