The Toyota Fortuner 2024 belongs where the smooth tarmac starts to run out. It shares its underpinnings with the Hilux pickup, so underneath the family-SUV shape sits a real ladder-frame chassis, low-range gearing and enough clearance to make a rutted desert track a non-event. We rent it in Dubai and bring it to your door in one to two hours, so you can size it up in your own street rather than a showroom. Most three-row SUVs you can rent here are soft crossovers dressed to look tough. This one genuinely isn't. The job of this page is to tell you whether that hardware fits your week, or whether you're paying for ability you'll never use.
The Fortuner is a proper body-on-frame 4x4, not a raised hatchback with plastic cladding. Power comes from a 4.0-litre V6 petrol making 235 hp and 376 Nm, sent through a six-speed automatic to a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case. In plain terms, you get high-range two-wheel drive for the road, four-wheel drive for sand and gravel, and a crawler low range for when grip runs out completely.
That truck DNA is the whole point, and it comes with a trade-off you should hear up front. The ride is firm and a little trucky over expansion joints and broken tarmac, and the tall body leans in quick corners. If you want a plush, car-like cruiser, this isn't it. If you want something that shrugs off a curb, a sand berm or a loaded roof rack, it is exactly the right tool.

The Fortuner seats seven across three rows, and the middle row is the good news. It's wide, sits fairly upright and takes three children or two adults in comfort, so the everyday four or five travel without anyone complaining.
Be realistic about the third row. It folds up from the boot sides and works for kids or a short adult hop across town, not a long haul to Abu Dhabi with grown-ups back there. Access takes a moment because the second row has to tip forward first. Treat the last row as occasional-use seating and you won't be disappointed.
Luggage is the honest caveat. With all seven seats up, the space behind the third row is small, enough for a few soft bags or the weekly shop, not a stack of hard cases. Fold that back row flat and the Fortuner turns into a big, square load bay that swallows a family's luggage for a week while still seating five. The compromise only bites on the rare day you need every seat and full luggage at once, and for most trips that day never arrives.
At a steady cruise the Fortuner is relaxed and quiet, and 235 hp is enough to sit at 120 on the E11 without feeling strained. It isn't quick, though. Moving more than two tonnes means overtaking wants a little planning rather than a stab of the throttle, so leave room and don't expect a hot hatch. This is a mile-eater, not a sprinter.
Fuel is where the V6 asks for something back. Toyota's combined figure sits around 11 litres per 100 km, but real Dubai driving, all traffic lights and AC on full, runs closer to 13 or 14. The 80-litre tank still gives a healthy range between fills. On mileage, this rental comes with a generous monthly allowance your desk confirms, with extra kilometres at AED 0.5 each, so a week of school runs and mall trips sits comfortably inside it and even a run out to Hatta won't trouble the limit. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you, the renter, as they do with every car we hand over.
Heat matters as much as anything in a Dubai summer. The cabin is large, and after a few hours parked in July sun it takes a minute to get comfortable, but the AC is strong and there are rear vents feeding the second and third rows, so the kids in the back get real cold air rather than leftovers. Size shows up when you park. At 4.8 metres long and sitting high, tight multi-storey bays and Marina tower ramps ask for the reversing camera and a bit of patience. The 225 mm of clearance pays you back everywhere else, turning speed bumps and steep mall ramps into things you stop noticing.
Off the tarmac the capability is real and worth respecting. With low range and proper 4x4 hardware, the dunes are genuinely within reach rather than a brochure claim. Dune driving is still a skill, not a button, so drop your tyre pressures, carry recovery gear and go out in convoy with someone who knows the route. Most Fortuners we rent never leave the blacktop, and there's nothing wrong with that either.
Rent the Fortuner if your week genuinely mixes seven seats, highway miles and real off-road use, or if you simply want something rugged and durable that won't flinch at a rough track or a heavy load. Nothing car-based matches it once the surface turns to sand, and Toyota reliability is a fair thing to bank on for a week away from home.
Look elsewhere if you'll spend all seven days on smooth city roads. A car-based crossover or a large sedan will ride softer, drink less and park easier for the same family duties, and you won't miss the low range you never engage. The Fortuner earns its keep when the trip is demanding. Rent it for what it can do, not for the badge on the grille. You'll need to be 21 to take the keys.
