The Toyota Corolla 2024 is what you book in Dubai when you would rather not think about the car again until you hand it back. It is a five-seat automatic sedan with the badge that ends most "which one should I pick" arguments before they start, and we get it to your door in one to two hours, no counter visit first. Nothing about the week ahead should catch you out: the 1.6-litre engine is unhurried rather than exciting, running costs stay low, and the cabin copes with the heat without fuss. This page comes down to one question: is that predictability what you need, or would you rather have more room.

What a week of it costs to run

Fuel is where the Corolla earns its keep. The 1.6-litre engine returns around 15 km per litre in the stop-start driving you do around town, and a 50-litre tank stretches to roughly 700 km before the needle starts to worry you. A normal week of commuting, school runs and a weekend errand or two costs one trip to the pump, sometimes none at all.

The daily allowance is 250 km, and anything past that is charged at AED 0.5 per extra kilometre. A working week rarely gets close to it. A day trip out to Al Ain or Hatta and back might push you over, and at that rate it is not a number worth worrying about before you go. Salik tolls and any RTA fines sit with you as the renter, same as with every car we hand over, and you will need to be 25 to take the keys for this one.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

The boot holds 368 litres, enough for one large suitcase and a couple of soft bags, or a stroller and the weekly shop, but it is not the biggest trunk in this class. Two adults flying in for a week with full-size cases will want to fold part of the rear seat down for the second bag rather than count on the trunk alone.

The back seat suits two adults across town without complaint, and the 2,700 mm wheelbase gives enough knee room that nobody is shifting around after twenty minutes in traffic. Three across the bench works for a short hop, not for daily use over a week. At 4.63 metres long and 1.78 wide, it is an easy size to place in a mall multi-storey or a tower basement bay, and the reversing camera handles the rest. Ground clearance sits at 135 mm, on the low side for the class. Ordinary speed bumps and shallow ramps are no problem at a crawl, but a steep basement entry or an unmarked kerb deserves more care than it would in a taller car. This is a front-wheel-drive road car on road tyres, so keep it on tarmac.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

On Sheikh Zayed Road the Corolla settles into a 120 km/h cruise without strain, though the CVT does the usual trick of holding a higher note under hard acceleration instead of stepping through gears. It is not the car for a fast, decisive overtake with a full load and the AC working hard. Read the traffic a little further ahead than you would in something with more mid-range punch, and it never feels caught out.

The AC is the part that gets tested properly in July and August. Front vents pull a baked cabin down fast once you climb back in and get moving, and because the cabin itself is compact, it does not take long. Rear vent provision varies by spec, so do not plan on the back seat getting its own airflow. Park in shade where it is on offer and give the windows a few seconds before you set off, and the heat becomes a minor inconvenience rather than a real complaint. None of this is luxury-brand cooling. It is a competent, no-drama system in a car that is not trying to be anything else, which is close to the whole case for renting a Corolla in the first place.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the Toyota Corolla 2024 if you want a sedan that does the job without asking much of you: reliable, cheap to run, easy to park, and backed by a badge that does not make anyone nervous about a week away from home. It suits a solo renter, a couple, or two adults handling the commute and errands who would rather spend their attention on the trip than the car.

Size up if you are regularly carrying four adults with full-size luggage, since the 368-litre boot and the back seat both run out of room before the group does. And if Hatta or a desert drive is on the plan, this is a front-wheel-drive tarmac car, not the one for it, so look at a crossover or a proper 4x4 instead. For an ordinary Dubai week, though, the Corolla is close to the safest booking on the list.
