The electricity bill when you actually use it

Spend a morning enjoying an open road and you will see less than that again.

In practice that means plugging in every second day instead of every third, which is a habit to set on day one rather than a problem. DEWA's public chargers are spread across malls, hotels and residential basements, and this car pulls up to 250 kW on a Tesla fast charger, so a real top-up happens while you eat rather than while you sleep.

The one day that needs arithmetic is the drive out of the city. A return run up to Jebel Jais is comfortably past 300 km before you have gone anywhere else, which puts it against both your remaining charge and the 300 km a day your booking includes. Anything beyond that is AED 0.5 per kilometre, so the trip is cheap without being free. Salik bills you at every gantry as usual, and any RTA fine raised during the rental comes back to your booking, which is worth remembering in a car this quick and this quiet.

Cases, passengers, and 20 inch wheels in a car park

Underneath the badge this is the same shape as any other 2024 Model 3, so the practical side is unchanged. That 594 litre rear boot is deep for a sedan and takes two large cases plus soft bags without a fight, and the 88 litre front boot is where the charging cables live so they are not rolling around your luggage. Two adults and two children flying into DXB will be fine. Four adults with a full week of cases each is the point to size up. The back seat holds two adults properly, and the sport seats up front grip you better than the standard car's through a fast corner.

Then there are the wheels. This car rides on 20 inch rims with very little tyre sidewall, and Dubai's concrete highway sections and flyover expansion joints are exactly the surface that finds them. Adaptive dampers are standard on the Performance and they do genuine work, so the ride is firm and busy rather than punishing. It is still stiffer than the standard 2024 car, and your passengers will notice on day three rather than day one. Clearance is 138 mm, ordinary sedan height, but 1851 kg of kerb weight means the car settles hard over a sharp bump. Take the steep mall ramps at an angle and the aggressive speed bumps slowly. It has no business off tarmac and nobody should treat it as though it does.

What a parked August afternoon does to the cabin

Glass roof, dark trim, an open car park at two in the afternoon. This cabin gets seriously hot standing still, and there is no honest way to describe it otherwise.

What rescues it is that nothing has to warm up first. Start the climate from the app before you walk out and the car pulls the cabin down while it is still parked, because there is no engine to idle and no compressor waiting on revs. Do that once in August and you will do it every day afterwards. Once you are moving the front vents pull hard, the ventilated front seats are the most useful thing Tesla added to this generation, and rear passengers get their own vents plus an 8 inch screen to set their own temperature without leaning forward. The acoustic glass also makes this the quietest Model 3 we hand over at 120 on the E11.

Heat charges you twice, though. The air conditioning draws from the same battery that moves the car, and a fast charger on a 45 degree afternoon will not hold its headline rate as long as it would in February.

The renters we steer away from this one

Take it if the driving is part of the point of your week: an early run out to the mountains, late highway distance, a driver who cares what happens when the road finally opens up. It answers instantly, it is the best finished Model 3 on our fleet, and it costs a fraction of what a petrol sedan of similar pace would drink. The only real requirement is somewhere to plug in near where you sleep.

Skip it in three cases. If your week is school runs, mall car parks and short hops, the standard 2024 Model 3 gives you the same cabin with more range and a softer ride, and the 3.1 seconds will not come up often enough to be worth the difference. If nobody in your party wants to think about charging, a petrol sedan refills in five minutes anywhere and that simplicity has real value. And if a cabin run almost entirely through screens sounds like a week of low-grade irritation, sit in one before you book rather than after.

For everyone else, this is a genuinely fast car with the running cost of something much duller, at your door in one to two hours.
