Tesla Model 3 2021 - start from 279 AED / day

The booking we see most often on the Tesla Model 3 2021 is a long one. A resident between cars, or someone here for a month, doing the same loop from an apartment in JLT to an office off Sheikh Zayed Road and back, five days a week. Call it 80 km a day. That is the use case where this car stops being a gadget and turns into a genuinely cheap way to move around Dubai, because the fuel line on your budget more or less disappears. We deliver across the city in one to two hours with 300 km a day included. Whether it works for you comes down to one thing, and it is not the car.

What a week of driving actually costs

Public AC charging on DEWA's Green Charger network is AED 0.70 per kWh before VAT. Depending on which battery your car carries, and these cars ran roughly 55 to 75 kWh usable, filling from near empty costs somewhere in the region of AED 40 to 55. DEWA's fast DC points charge AED 1.20 per kWh, so a rapid top-up runs closer to double that. Even at the expensive end you are paying well under half what a petrol sedan of the same size costs to fill, and on a heavy week you will fill it two or three times.

The rest of the bill behaves like any other rental. Salik deducts as you pass a gantry, RTA fines during your booking come back to you, and the 300 km a day included covers a commuting week comfortably. Past that, extra kilometres are AED 0.5 each, which only matters if your daily loop is genuinely long.

The charging routine, and when it gets annoying

If the building you are staying in has a charger in the basement, plug in at night and this entire section stops applying to you. You wake up near full, you never queue for anything, and the car costs you a few dirhams a day. Plenty of towers here have units downstairs, so ask before you book. Without one, you are fitting a stop or two into your week at the DEWA points sitting in malls and hotel car parks, or at a Tesla Supercharger for the quick ones. An AC point wants a couple of hours, so it works while you eat and not much else. Some renters find that trivial and some find it a low-grade irritation for seven days straight.

Range at least lets you be relaxed about the timing. When new, the 2021 car was rated somewhere between about 450 and 580 km depending on version. A pack this age has typically given up around a tenth of that, and a Dubai summer with the AC flat out takes more, so plan on 320 to 460 km of real driving between charges. Even the pessimistic end of that covers four days of an 80 km commute.

Loading it for an airport run

The front boot is the part renters underestimate. It holds 88 litres, which is a cabin case or, more usefully, the charging cables and the adapter bag so they are not rolling around the rear boot every time you brake. Total cargo comes to 561 litres across both ends, and the rear boot has a deep well under the floor for the soft bags you would otherwise stack on the parcel shelf. Two people flying out of DXB or DWC with a large case each and hand luggage will not have to think about it. Four adults with four large cases is where the sloping tailgate starts to argue with you, and the rear middle seat is a short-hop position rather than somewhere to sit for an hour.

At 4.69 metres it slots into standard multi-storey bays without a negotiation, and the turning circle makes the U-turns Dubai insists on painless. Ground clearance is 140 mm, ordinary sedan height, so take the sharper speed bumps and steeper ramp lips slowly and nothing catches. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat here and under-fours need a child seat, which we fit on request.

Cooling a parked cabin in July

Leave any car in 45 degree sun and it becomes an oven. The Model 3's advantage is that you can start the air conditioning from your phone while you are still upstairs, so you walk into a cool car instead of a hot one. Thirty seconds of planning, and in a Dubai summer it is the most useful feature the car has. Once you are moving, the front vents pull hard and the rear seats get their own outlets, so a full cabin cools evenly rather than leaving the back row to suffer. The large glass roof does soak up heat while parked, and these seats are not ventilated, so on a dark interior in August the first two minutes still sting.

The cabin itself is minimal to a degree that divides people. One 15-inch screen, no display ahead of the steering wheel, almost nothing in the way of buttons. This 2021 car does keep proper column stalks for the indicators and the gear selector, which the later Model 3 dropped, and plenty of drivers strongly prefer it that way.

Who should book something else

Rent this one if you are covering real distance and you can plug in where you sleep. For a month-long stay with a daily commute, the running cost genuinely changes what the week adds up to, and the drivetrain is the good part of the deal rather than the compromise. Instant torque and no gearbox mean merging into fast E11 traffic takes one push of your right foot. Anyone aged 18 to 20 who has been turned away by desks that stop at 21 can book it here too.

Look elsewhere if quiet is what you are paying for. This is the pre-facelift car, with single-pane rear glass and less sound deadening than the current one, so coarse asphalt at 120 km/h puts real tyre roar into the back of the cabin. The ride is firm, and Dubai's harder expansion joints come through the seat. A petrol sedan at similar money is softer and quieter, and it refuels anywhere in five minutes. If your trip is short, packed and unpredictable, that convenience is worth more than the fuel saving. If you are here for weeks and driving every day, it is not close.
