We rent the 2020 Porsche Macan in Dubai with a no-deposit option, so you can have a genuine Porsche SUV at your door in one to two hours without locking up a chunk of your card. The Macan is the compact-SUV end of the range: a 2.0-litre turbo petrol, all-wheel drive through a quick seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, five seats and a usable boot. Our take is that this is the Porsche you rent when you want the badge and the build quality but also need the car to do real work all week, school runs, mall trips, an airport pickup. It's premium and properly screwed together, not a sports car wearing an SUV body. Here's where it fits and where it doesn't.

The five seats and the boot, for a real week

This is the everyday strength. Five adults fit without complaint, and the cabin feels solid and expensive in the way Porsche interiors do, with materials that hold up to a hot summer better than most. The driving position is high and clear, which makes Dubai's traffic and tight parking far less stressful than the low Porsches in the range.

Luggage is honest mid-size SUV. With all seats up you'll fit two large 23kg suitcases plus soft bags in the boot, which covers a couple or a small family for a week. Fold the rear seats and the space opens up to swallow around six large cases, so it doubles as a load-hauler when you need it. For two adults collecting bags from DXB or DWC it's comfortable. For four adults each with a full-size case, you'll be folding a seat or thinking about a Cayenne.

How it drives, and what to expect from the engine

The base 2.0-litre turbo makes 252 hp, and through Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch it feels brisk and refined rather than fast. It pulls away cleanly, the gearbox is smart and quick, and overtaking on Sheikh Zayed Road is easy enough with a bit of planning. Don't expect the shove of the bigger Macan S or the sports cars, this one is about smooth, confident progress, and at that it's very good.

All-wheel drive means it puts its power down neatly and stays planted at speed. On the E11 it's quiet and stable at the limit, the kind of car that makes a long day of driving feel short.

Fuel and how often you'll fill up

The 75-litre tank is generous, and that's what matters across a week here. In city use you'll see roughly 8 to 10 km per litre, more on the highway, which gives a real-world range stretching toward 1,000 km on lighter motorway driving. In practice that means a tank lasts most of a normal week of mixed Dubai running, and a couple of airport runs won't leave you hunting for a station. The trade-off for a turbo Porsche is that it prefers the better fuel, so budget for that.

Heat, parking and Dubai roads

The cabin cooling is strong, which counts from May through September when a parked car bakes at 45 degrees. The Macan's climate system pulls the temperature down quickly once you're moving, the front vents are powerful, and rear passengers get their own outlets so kids in the back aren't left suffering. Give it a minute with the doors shut and it's comfortable.

At 4.7 metres it's a touch longer than a typical compact SUV, but the high seating and good visibility make multi-storey bays and the steep Marina ramps manageable. The 205 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and mall entry lips without drama, so you're not crawling over every hump. It's a road-biased all-wheel-drive system rather than a desert machine, so it handles graded tracks and the occasional rough patch fine, but soft dune driving wants a proper 4x4.

The running costs that fall to you

Salik tolls are charged to you as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you as well. Child seats are required by law for under-fours and we can fit one on request. None of it is unusual for Dubai, just worth knowing before you set off.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Macan 2020 if you want a real Porsche that works as an everyday car, you're a couple or a small family, and you value the badge, the cabin quality and the easy high-up drive over outright pace. With the no-deposit option it's an easy car to put on your week here.

Look at a Cayenne if you regularly carry four adults with full luggage or want more straight-line punch. And if the Porsche badge isn't the point and you just want space and comfort for less, a mainstream premium SUV will save you money for room that's honestly close. The Macan's appeal is the way it blends a genuine Porsche feel with real daily usability, and on that it delivers.
