The Opel Zafira Life 2023 solves one problem better than almost anything else on our fleet: a genuinely full car of people. The engine, and how it drives

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbodiesel making 180 hp and 400 Nm, sent through an 8-speed automatic to the front wheels. That torque figure matters more than the power one. Diesels pull hard low in the rev range, which is exactly what you want moving a van loaded with nine adults and their bags away from a standstill. It settles into Sheikh Zayed Road cruising comfortably and holds 120 km/h without strain.

Don't expect urgency, though. With a full load an overtake needs planning rather than a stab of throttle, and this is a front-wheel-drive van on road tyres, not a 4x4. It has no business on sand or a rough desert track, and we wouldn't send it there. What it does well is stay composed and predictable on tarmac, which is the job it's built for.

Seats, boot and the daily use

Three full rows, three seats across in each, is the whole pitch. Middle and rear rows have real legroom, not the knees-up compromise you get in a seven-seat SUV's third row, because the Zafira Life is built on a van platform with the interior space to match. Sliding doors on both sides mean loading a full group in a tight hotel bay or a mall drop-off is straightforward: no swinging doors to manage in a cramped multi-storey.

The boot behind the third row holds roughly 600 litres, genuinely useful for a full nine-person trip rather than the afterthought you get in most three-row cars. Fold or remove the rearmost row and that space grows sharply if you're running fewer people and more cargo.

The size does ask for some care. At just over 2 metres across the mirrors, it's wide, so a Marina tower ramp or a narrow mall multi-storey bay wants mirrors folded and a slower pace. The low, flat floor that makes loading easy also means this isn't a car for rough tracks or aggressive speed bumps taken at speed; treat it like the road-going van it is.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

The 70-litre tank is generous, and diesel is easy to find at any Dubai station. Official combined economy sits close to 5.5 to 6 litres per 100 km, but that's a lab figure. Loaded with nine people and the air conditioning working through a Dubai afternoon, expect closer to 8 litres per 100 km in real city driving. Even so, one tank comfortably covers a week of school runs, mall trips and an airport pickup before you need to think about a fill-up.

Cooling a nine-seat cabin takes longer than cooling a sedan, simply because there's more air to move through three rows. The front vents pull the first two rows down quickly; the third row catches up a little behind. Start the car and give it a few minutes before loading everyone in on the hottest afternoons, and park in shade or a basement where you can. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and if you're carrying anyone under four, bring a child seat, worth arranging with us ahead of a full-group booking. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, as with every car on our fleet.

The daily allowance on this car is 250 km, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre past that, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys. For most Dubai-based groups doing city runs and the odd desert-coast day trip, 250 km covers it without a second thought.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Zafira Life if you're genuinely moving eight or nine people and want everyone in a real seat with real legroom, at a lower rate than the V-Class. Visiting family groups, work teams, wedding parties splitting rides, this is the sensible booking, and the sliding doors make loading and unloading painless compared with a big SUV's swinging rear doors.

Look elsewhere if you're regularly four people or fewer. A crossover or sedan costs less to rent, parks easier, and you won't be hauling around six empty seats. And if what you actually want is a plusher cabin and don't mind paying more for it, the V-Class is the better fit; it doesn't beat the Zafira Life on outright seat count or price, but it wins on finish and badge.
