Nissan Versa 2021 - start from 122 AED / day

We hand over the Nissan Versa 2021 across Dubai with the no-deposit option, so you can book this compact sedan without parking a security hold on your card for the week. The Versa is the cheap, roomy choice in our economy line, a five-seat sedan with a real boot and a back seat that adults actually fit in. This page is about whether that adds up for your week here, because the Versa is a calm, frugal commuter and a sensible airport car, not a quick one. If you want pace or polish, you'll want to read to the end first.

What you're actually renting

The Versa shares its bones with the Sunny and Almera you'll see all over Dubai, so the formula is familiar: a 1.6-litre four-cylinder making 122 hp, front-wheel drive, and a CVT automatic. That power figure reads fine on paper, and around town the car feels perfectly adequate. It pulls away from lights without fuss and sits at city speeds happily.

The honesty starts when you ask it for more. The CVT holds the engine at a high, steady note when you floor it to merge or overtake, and that drone is the Versa's least pleasant trait. You learn to plan your overtakes rather than stab the pedal. Driven normally it's quiet and smooth, which is most of how a rental gets used anyway.

The boot, and whether your airport cases fit

This is where the Versa earns its keep. The boot is around 425 litres, which is large for an economy car and the main reason I'd pick it over a hatch for an airport run. Two large suitcases plus a couple of cabin bags go in without a fight, and there's room left for the odd backpack. A family of four landing at DXB with a week's luggage will be fine, which is rarely true in this price band.

The opening is a touch narrow, so a single oversized hard case can need angling, but volume isn't the problem. For DXB or DWC runs, the Versa is one of the easier cheap sedans to load.

Running it through a Dubai week

You'll refuel rarely. With roughly 41 litres in the tank and real-world economy near 6.7 L/100km, a full tank covers something close to 600 km, so a normal week of commuting and errands is one fill, maybe two if you're out to Abu Dhabi and back. Petrol is cheap here, and the Versa sips it, which is the whole point of renting in this class.

The cabin cools quickly, and that matters more than the brochure suggests. Park it in the sun at 45 in July and the AC pulls the small cabin down to comfortable within a few minutes, faster than a big SUV manages because there's simply less air to chill. There are no rear vents, so back-seat passengers rely on airflow from the front, which is fine for two adults on shorter hops but worth knowing if you'll have kids in the back on a long run.

Keep in mind the Salik tolls you trigger on Sheikh Zayed Road and the other gantries come back to you, and any RTA fines during the rental are yours too. Seat belts are mandatory front and rear. None of that is Versa-specific, but it's the part renters forget until the statement arrives.

Parking and the city

At 4.5 metres long and a touch under 1.75 wide, the Versa slots into tight multi-storey bays and Marina parking without the shuffle a midsize sedan needs. The light steering makes U-turns and reversing easy, and the 132 mm of clearance is enough for mall ramps and standard speed bumps. It's a low car, so the aggressive humps in some residential clusters want a slow approach, but you won't scrape on anything normal.

Visibility is good and the turning circle is tight, so first-time visitors who aren't used to Dubai's interchanges will find it forgiving.

On Sheikh Zayed Road

The Versa cruises at 120 calmly enough, and it'll sit in the fast lane on E11 without drama. Ask it to surge past a truck and you meet that CVT drone again, plus a clear sense that the engine is relaxed rather than eager. For steady highway cruising and airport runs it's genuinely comfortable. For a driver who overtakes a lot or carries four adults up to full speed often, it starts to feel stretched.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Versa if you want the cheapest sensible sedan for commuting, errands and airport runs, value the big boot and the comfortable back seat, and don't care that it's slow. For a couple or a small family doing city miles on a budget, it's hard to beat.

Step up to a midsize sedan, an Altima or similar, if you'll regularly carry four adults at speed, spend long stretches on the highway, or want the cabin to feel less basic. And if it's just you running around town with light luggage, a smaller hatch like the Picanto or Spark will cost less and park even easier. The Versa's case is space and frugality at a soft rate, and on that it delivers.
