Turn 21 and plenty of Dubai rental fleets still won't take your booking. Not this one. The Nissan Sunny 2024 rents to drivers from 21, so a proper automatic sedan is on the table for renters several agencies have already turned away for being too young. It's a five-seat economy sedan with a 1.6-litre engine and a CVT automatic, nothing showy, and that's really the appeal: cheap to run, easy to park, built for the commutes and errands most 21-to-25 year olds actually drive here. We can have it at your door within one to two hours. The real question is whether cheap and easy also adds up to enough car for your week.

Easy to book, easy to run

Most Dubai agencies set the bar at 25 for anything with real space, which leaves a 21, 22 or 23 year old choosing between a tiny hatchback or nothing at all. The Sunny breaks that pattern. Minimum age here is 21, and the paperwork at handover is short: a valid license, ID, and a debit card or cash on delivery both work. We bring the car to you, home, hotel or the airport, usually within one to two hours of booking.

Running it costs little once you're actually driving. The 1.6-litre engine through an Xtronic CVT gets a combined figure of about 18 km per litre from Nissan, though Dubai traffic with the AC working hard brings that down to roughly 13 to 14 in real city use. The 41-litre tank still covers three or four days of ordinary driving before you need a refill. The rental includes 250 km a day, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 a kilometre, which won't sting even on a day trip out of the city. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are yours to cover, small costs but worth keeping in mind against a young renter's budget.

Space, boot and passengers

For a car pitched at younger renters, the Sunny is surprisingly not cramped. The boot holds 490 litres, big for an economy sedan and larger than most hatchbacks at a similar rate, so a single large suitcase and a duffel bag, or a term's worth of luggage for someone relocating to the city, go in without a fight.

The back seat is the other pleasant surprise. Two adults get real legroom on a longer drive, and three across works for short runs between apartments or to the mall. Share the car with a roommate or two and everyone has room to sit properly, not perch. Where it tightens is four adults out for a full day, cases included. The cabin and the modest engine both start to feel the load at that point.

Parking suits the profile too. At just under 1.74 metres wide, the Sunny fits into tight multi-storey bays without the mirror-folding anxiety wider sedans cause, and it's short enough to turn cleanly on a narrow street. It sits low, so ease off on steep ramps and sharp speed bumps rather than taking them at pace.

A small engine and the AC in the heat

The 118 hp engine and CVT are tuned for steady cruising, not quick overtakes. Sitting at 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road is no trouble, but pull out to pass with a full car and the AC running, and the CVT sends the revs up a beat before the speed catches up. Fine for the daily commute or an airport run, less fine if your week involves a lot of fast-lane overtaking.

Heat is the other honest conversation. A car left out in a Dubai afternoon turns into an oven regardless of badge, and the Sunny has no advanced climate tech to soften that. What it does have is a small cabin, which means less air for the blower to fight. Point the front vents at yourself, give it three or four minutes, and it goes from unbearable to comfortable. There's no rear vent, so anyone in the back seat waits a little longer on the worst days. Park in shade or underground where you can, and most of that first blast of heat never builds up in the first place.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

If you're 21 to 25 and want an automatic sedan without paying a premium for your age, the Sunny is close to the obvious pick. It suits a first UAE rental, a solo mover with a suitcase, or two or three people sharing the running costs on a city-based week. Set against a Yaris sedan or an MG5, it usually gives you a bigger boot and back seat for a similar bill, which is most of the argument for choosing it.

Two situations call for something bigger. A full week with four adults and their bags will work, but it asks a lot of a modest engine and a snug cabin, so a mid-size sedan earns its extra cost there. And if your plans involve real overtaking rather than steady cruising, the CVT will hold a highway speed all day without complaint but won't reward pushing it. Outside those two cases, the Sunny does what a young renter needs from a first Dubai car: it books at 21, it's cheap to run, and it can be at your door within one to two hours.
