Nissan Sentra 2022 - start from 165 AED / day

Park a Nissan Sentra 2022 outside a Dubai hotel and people assume you spent more than you did. The lines, the wide stance and the long roof read like a bigger sedan, but it rents for compact money, and we hand it over with no deposit, so nothing gets blocked on your card while you have it. That gap between how it looks and what it costs is the whole reason to pick this car. It's a comfortable, frugal compact sedan with a genuinely roomy cabin and a big boot, ideal for a value commuter or an airport pickup. The catch is the relaxed engine and a CVT that drones when you push it, and we'll be honest about both.

Where the Sentra fits

This is a five-seat compact sedan in the economy class, and it punches above that label on space. Two adults up front sit with room to spare, and the back seat takes three at a push or two in real comfort for a week of running around. If your trips are mostly solo commuting, the school run, or ferrying a couple of guests from the airport to the hotel, the Sentra has more than enough car for the job.

What it isn't is a quick car. The 2.0-litre four makes 149 horsepower, which is fine for keeping pace, but it asks for patience when you floor it. The continuously variable transmission holds revs high under hard acceleration, and that's where the engine note turns into a drone. Drive it the way most people actually drive in Dubai, smooth and unhurried, and you barely notice. Hammer every gap on Sheikh Zayed Road and it'll grumble at you.

Do my airport cases fit

The boot is the Sentra's quiet strength. At 405 litres it's bigger than most compact sedans and close to midsize territory, so a real airport run isn't a problem. Two large hard cases plus a couple of cabin bags slide in with room over the top, and the wide opening means you're not wrestling cases past a narrow lip. For a family of four landing at DXB with a week's luggage, this is one of the few economy-class cars where the boot won't force someone to hold a bag on their lap. Fold the rear seats and you've got space for something bulky like a stroller or a pushed-flat box of shopping.

How often you'll refuel

The Sentra sips fuel for its size. Expect somewhere around 7 to 8 litres per 100km in mixed Dubai driving, leaning higher in stop-and-go on Salik-heavy commutes and lower on a steady E11 cruise. With a 46-litre tank that works out to roughly 640 km of combined range, and fuel here is cheap, so a full tank covers most of a week of normal use. A run out to Abu Dhabi and back won't have you hunting for a station, and day-to-day you're filling up maybe once a week rather than mid-week.

Heat, parking and the daily stuff

Cabin cooling is the first thing anyone notices in a Dubai summer, and the Sentra handles it well for the class. The front vents pull a parked cabin down from oven heat to comfortable inside a few minutes when it's 45 outside, helped by the dark interior not being too vast to cool. Rear passengers get vents too, which matters if you're carrying guests on a long airport transfer. Start it, set the AC, give it two or three minutes before you load up, and it's pleasant by the time you pull away.

Parking is easy. At 4.6 metres long it slots into standard mall and Marina bays without drama, the turning circle is tidy for U-turns, and visibility out the back is good enough that tight multi-storey ramps don't raise your pulse. Ground clearance is a modest 127 mm, so take speed bumps and steep ramp lips slowly, but on Dubai's smooth roads that low stance just makes it feel planted at speed.

A couple of practical notes for the rental. Salik tolls run on your account while you have the car, and any RTA fines pass to you, so keep an eye on lane discipline and speed cameras on the big roads. Seatbelts are mandatory for everyone in the car. None of this is Sentra-specific, but it's worth saying once.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Sentra if you want a sedan that looks and feels more expensive than it costs, with a boot big enough for proper airport luggage and running costs low enough to forget about. It's the value pick for a solo commuter, a small family, or anyone wanting comfort and presence without paying midsize rates.

Step up to a midsize sedan like an Altima or a Camry if you'll spend long stretches overtaking at speed on the E11, or if you regularly carry four adults and want effortless pace rather than adequate pace. Step down to a hatchback if it's only ever city errands and parking is your single biggest worry, since you won't use the Sentra's boot or its highway poise. For most people landing in Dubai who want one comfortable, good-looking car to cover commuting, guests and airport runs without overspending, the Sentra is the smart middle.
