If you see a Patrol listing quoting 4.8 litres and 280 hp, that is the old Super Safari, a different car entirely, and worth ruling out before you compare rates elsewhere. The new engine gets this two-and-a-half-tonne SUV to 100 km/h in about 6.7 seconds, with the turbos already working at low revs so overtaking on Sheikh Zayed Road takes a squeeze of the pedal rather than a downshift and a wait.

What matters more than the horsepower figure is what sits underneath it. This is a body-on-frame 4x4 with a genuine low-range transfer case and terrain modes for sand, rock, mud and snow, not a crossover badged to look tougher than it is. Engage low range and the gearing multiplies torque for a slow, controlled crawl, the setting that actually gets you up a soft dune face or down a rutted wadi track. Most rentals never touch it. Filling all eight seats, and what's left for the bags

Depending on whether the middle row is a bench or captain's chairs, the Patrol seats seven or eight, and the third row is built for adults, not just kids folded in for a short hop. Fill every seat and the boot behind the last row is modest, enough for soft bags or the weekly shop rather than a stack of hard cases. Fold that third row down and the load area opens up properly, enough for a family's luggage on an airport run with room to spare. If your week needs eight people and eight suitcases at once, no three-row SUV pulls that off, and you should plan around it rather than hope the boot stretches.

The size that buys you the third row asks something back in a car park. The low-range transfer case and the terrain modes are not decoration, and the new V6 makes this a noticeably nicer thing to drive than the V8 it replaced. Look elsewhere if it is one or two of you running errands around the city with no plan to leave the tarmac. You will spend the week placing a five-metre SUV in bays it barely fills and fuelling an engine built for a job you are not asking it to do. A mid-size SUV handles that week for less money and far less hassle in a tight bay. Match the car to the driving you actually intend, and the Patrol earns every bit of its size.
