Underneath, it stays a body-on-frame 4x4 with a low-range transfer case and terrain modes for sand, rock, mud and snow. That matters below, because it means the off-road ability is real, not a badge on a soft crossover.

Space, the third row and luggage

This is the real reason to size up to a Patrol. Depending on the middle-row layout it seats seven or eight, and unlike most three-row SUVs the back row takes actual adults for a proper journey, rather than only kids on a short hop.
