Open the bonnet and you find the 5.6-litre V8 that has powered this generation since it launched: 400 hp at 5,800 rpm and 560 Nm at 4,000 rpm, sent through a seven-speed automatic to all four wheels with a genuine low-range transfer case. This is not a crossover system dressed up to look tough. It is a body-on-frame chassis built the old way, and the drive shows it. Torque arrives early and stays flat, so pulling out to overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road takes a squeeze of the pedal, not a downshift and a wait. Nissan quotes 0-100 km/h in around 6.6 seconds and a top speed near 210 km/h, both quick for something over five metres long.

A share of Patrols from this year in the GCC carry a smaller 4.0-litre V6 instead. It still drives the car fine, just without the shove described above, so if the V8 is the reason you are booking this exact year, ask us to confirm the engine on your unit.

None of that changes for 2025, and that is the point. Next year's Patrol trades this V8 for a quieter turbo V6 that is quicker on paper and calmer at a cruise. What it will not give you is the way this older engine builds power, and that is exactly what a share of renters are still asking for. On the road the size only becomes a factor once you park. At 5.14 metres long and just under two metres wide, tight multi-storey bays and Marina ramps want the cameras and a slow hand, while 275 mm of ground clearance turns speed bumps and steep mall entrances into things you stop noticing.

Seven real seats, and the luggage trade-off that comes with them

Nissan builds this generation as a seven-seater, eight if your unit's middle row is a bench rather than captain's chairs, and it is worth asking the desk which layout your car has. What matters more is that the third row is not a token bench for children. The middle row slides and tips forward on its own, so getting back there does not take a production, and once you are in it, an adult can do the drive to Abu Dhabi without complaint, not just the ten-minute school run.

The catch is the boot, and it is worth being straight about it. With every seat up, the space behind the third row holds a few soft bags and a pushchair, not a stack of hard suitcases for seven people. Fold one side of the third row down and you get a proper load bay for cases while five or six people still travel. Drop the whole row and it takes a big family's luggage for a week without any trouble. The day this actually catches people out is the rare one where you need every seat filled and every case packed at once. On most trips, that day never comes.

What this V8 drinks, and how it copes with the heat

A 5.6-litre V8 moving two and a half tonnes was never going to sip fuel, and the combined figure of around 14 L/100km undersells what you will actually see. Dubai traffic with the air conditioning working hard tends to push real consumption closer to 16 or 17 litres per 100 km. The 140-litre tank is what makes that bearable, buying several days of ordinary driving between fills even with a heavy right foot, so you are not hunting for a station every other day.

Mileage matters more than the fuel bill on most trips. The included allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre past that, which covers city errands, school runs and airport pickups with room to spare, though a full day out to Hatta and back is worth totting up first. You will need to be 25 to take the keys. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you as the renter, the same as on every car we hand over.

This fleet's Patrol is white, which genuinely helps through a Dubai summer. A pale body reflects more heat than a dark one, so the panels stay cooler to the touch after hours in an open car park, and the compressor is not starting from as deep a hole. That said, a cabin this size still bakes through the glass no matter the paint. Climb back in after a few hours in the sun and give it a couple of minutes. The front vents pull the temperature down fast, and because the rear vents are properly fed, the third row is not stuck breathing whatever warm air the front seats leave behind.

Who this last-shape Patrol suits, and who should wait for 2025

Book this year specifically if the V8 and the old-school hardware are the point: a big family or group with real luggage, a week that mixes highway distance with a run toward the sand, or simply wanting the shape and the sound Dubai has driven for over a decade before Nissan retires it for good. Nothing about the drive here feels unfinished. It is a known formula, and this is one of the last chances to book it in this exact form.

If what you actually want is the newer twin-turbo V6, quieter, quicker, and a touch easier on fuel, ask about the 2025 Patrol instead. It carries the same seven or eight seats and the same low-range hardware inside a redesigned shell. And if it is one or two of you running errands with the odd airport pickup, size down regardless of the year. You will spend the week parking a five-metre SUV and feeding a thirsty V8 for a job a mid-size crossover or a sedan handles for less money and far less fuss in a tight bay.
