The V8, and how it handles the road

Nothing about this generation apologizes for its size. The 5.6-litre V8 makes 400 hp at 5,800 rpm and 560 Nm at 4,000 rpm, run through a seven-speed automatic to a proper body-on-frame chassis with a low-range transfer case, the same layout that has carried this car since it launched. The torque shows up early and stays flat, so pulling out to pass on Sheikh Zayed Road takes a squeeze of the pedal rather than a downshift and a wait. Nissan's own figures put 0-100 km/h at around 6.6 seconds, which is quick for something over five metres long. A share of Patrols from this model year in the GCC run a smaller 4.0-litre V6 instead. At 5.14 metres long and just under two metres wide, this is a car that wants a slow hand and a working camera in a tight Marina ramp or a multi-storey mall bay. The 275 mm of ground clearance is what you're paying for in return: speed bumps, steep driveway lips and the odd rutted stretch out toward Hatta stop being things you think about.

Space inside, and what the boot takes

The Y62 seats seven with second-row captain's chairs, eight if your unit has the middle-row bench instead, and it's worth asking which layout you've been given when the car arrives. Either way the third row is a real seat, not a token one. The middle row slides and folds forward on its own, so climbing back isn't a production, and an adult can do a genuine airport run or a Hatta trip from there without complaining.

The boot is the honest catch. With all three rows up, the space behind the last one takes a few soft bags and not much more, nowhere near enough for seven people's suitcases. Fold one side of the third row down and you get a real load bay while five or six still travel. Drop the whole row and it swallows a big family's luggage for a week with room spare. Plan for one of those two configurations rather than assuming everyone rides and everyone's hard case fits at the same time, because that combination is where this car runs out of space.

The mileage deal, fuel and cabin heat

This is where the two opening numbers matter. The 4,000 km isn't a daily cap, it's a total allowance for the whole rental, yours to use however the trip shapes up. A 5.6-litre V8 moving this much metal was never going to sip fuel, and the combined figure of around 14 L/100km undersells what Dubai traffic with the air conditioning working hard actually returns, often closer to 16 or 17. The 140-litre tank absorbs that, buying several days between fills even with a heavy right foot. White helps more than people expect here too: the panels stay cooler to the touch after hours in an open car park than a dark equivalent would, so the compressor isn't starting from as deep a hole. Climb back in and give it a couple of minutes regardless. The front vents pull the cabin down fast, and because the rear vents are properly fed, the third row isn't left breathing whatever warm air the front seats discard first. Book this Patrol for real distance, not a quick errand

Book the Patrol 2024 if the trip genuinely needs the room and the range: a big family with real luggage, a stay long enough to spread that 4,000 km across a couple of weeks, or a group that wants one of the last V8s before the badge moves to a turbo V6. The mileage allowance rewards exactly that kind of booking, and the drive underneath it hasn't dated at all.

Look elsewhere if you're here for a short city break of hotel-to-mall driving and the odd airport pickup. You won't get close to using 4,000 km, you'll spend the week parking five metres of SUV for errands a mid-size crossover handles just as easily, and any detour that pushes you over the allowance costs AED 2.0 a kilometre for the privilege.
