The Nissan Patrol 2022 is the big, old-school V8 SUV that Dubai more or less runs on, and we rent it here with delivery to your door in one to two hours. This is the Y62 generation, the one with the 5.6-litre V8 up front, not the reinvented model that arrived a few years later. It earns its place for a specific kind of week: a large family, a group heading out to the sand, or anyone who wants real space and pulling power without paying luxury-SUV money. What this page settles is whether that much car actually suits your trip, or whether you're booking size you'll spend seven days trying to park.

What you're actually renting

Underneath the size sits a 5.6-litre petrol V8 making 400 hp and 560 Nm, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic. This is a proper body-on-frame 4x4 with a low-range transfer case, not a tall crossover with rugged styling. On the road you get smooth, effortless torque. Off it you get genuine desert hardware.

One thing to check before you book. Some Patrols from this year run the smaller 4.0-litre V6 instead of the V8, and while it still moves the car fine, it's noticeably less muscular. Seven seats and the space behind them

The Patrol seats seven, and unlike most three-row SUVs it means it. The middle row is wide enough for three across or two adults with room to stretch, and the third row takes grown-ups for a real journey, not just a short hop with the kids folded in. Getting back there is easy too, because the second row slides and tips out of the way. Nobody has to lose an argument over who sits in the back.

Luggage is where you plan a little. With all seven seats up, the boot behind the last row is modest, enough for a few soft bags, a pushchair or the weekly shop, not a stack of hard cases. Fold one side of the third row flat and you get a long load bay for suitcases while still seating five or six. Drop the whole row and it swallows a big family's luggage for a week. The only day it bites is the rare one when you need every seat and full cases at once, and for most trips that day never comes.

Highway manners and what the V8 costs to run

On Sheikh Zayed Road the Patrol is in its element. It settles at 120 without fuss, stays quiet, and the V8 has so much in reserve that overtaking a slow lorry needs no run-up at all. For something over five metres long, it reaches 100 km/h in about six and a half seconds, which still surprises people at the lights.

The bill for all that is fuel. A two-and-a-half-tonne V8 crawling through Dubai traffic with the AC flat out is thirsty, and real-world consumption sits closer to 16 or 17 litres per 100 km than the combined figure suggests. The 140-litre tank is the saving grace, giving you a long run between fills even with a heavy right foot. Mileage is the number to check before you head out of town. The daily allowance is 250 km, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre over, so city errands and airport runs stay well inside it, but a full day out to Hatta and back wants a quick tally first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are on you, the renter, as they are with every car we hand over.

Heat, tight bays and the dunes

A cabin this big needs a strong system to cool it, and the Patrol delivers. After hours parked in July sun it pulls the temperature down quickly once you climb back in, and rear vents feed the second and third rows so passengers behind you get real cold air, not leftovers.

Size shows up when you park. At 5.14 metres long and nearly two wide, tight multi-storey bays and Marina tower ramps ask for the cameras and a bit of patience. The 275 mm of ground clearance pays you back everywhere else, turning speed bumps and steep mall ramps into things you stop noticing. Off the tarmac the capability is real. With low range and proper 4x4 hardware, the dunes are genuinely within reach rather than a marketing line. Dune driving is still a skill, not a button, so drop your tyre pressures, carry recovery gear and go out in convoy with someone who knows the route. Plenty of Patrols we rent never leave the blacktop, and that's fine too.

Who should book it, who should scale down

Rent the Patrol 2022 if you're a big family or a group travelling with luggage, or if your week genuinely mixes highway miles, seven passengers and a day in the sand. Nothing in this class does the people-and-cargo job with less compromise, and the V8 makes long drives feel like nothing. You'll need to be 25 to take the keys.

Scale down if it's one or two of you doing city errands and the odd airport run. You'll spend the week parking a five-metre SUV and feeding a big V8 for a job a mid-size crossover or a sedan does for far less money. The Patrol is a lot of car, and it's worth every metre when the trip calls for it. Book it for the group and the load, not for the badge on the grille.
