This is the Y62-generation Patrol, built around a 5.6-litre V8 making 400 hp at 5,800 rpm and 560 Nm at 4,000 rpm, sent through a seven-speed automatic to a genuine four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case. It isn't a crossover dressed up to look rugged. It's the same body-on-frame layout Nissan has used for years, and the low range is what actually gets you through soft sand rather than just looking the part in a car park. In a straight line it's brisk for something this size, 0 to 100 km/h in around 6.6 seconds, with pull available the moment you ask for it on Sheikh Zayed Road.

A share of 2022 Patrols in the region carry a 4.0-litre V6 instead, a decent engine but noticeably quieter, without the shove described above. If the V8 is the reason you're booking this car, ask us to confirm the engine on your specific unit.

Now the number that actually shapes the trip. 250 km a day is generous for city errands, school runs and airport pickups. It gets tight on a day trip: Hatta and back alone is close to 180 km round trip, and if you've already used the car for daily driving, that single outing can push you 60 or 70 km over. At AED 10 a kilometre, that's an extra AED 600 or 700 on one day's driving, far steeper than the 50-cent overage rates on smaller cars in our fleet. Minimum age to rent is 21. Plan the week's driving before you leave the desk, not after.

Seats, boot and the honest cargo trade-off

Seven seats here means seven usable seats, not cramped compromise. The middle row is wide enough for three adults or two with real space either side, and the third row takes grown-ups for an actual journey, not just a short hop with knees against the seatback in front. The second row slides and tips forward on its own, so climbing back isn't a production every time someone needs to get in.

Cargo is where you plan ahead rather than assume. With all seven seats up, the boot behind the third row is genuinely modest, room for backpacks, a couple of soft bags and a pushchair, not a stack of hard suitcases for a full group. Drop one side of the third row and you're at six seats with a proper load bay beside them, enough for four or five large cases. Fold the whole row flat and it swallows a big family's luggage for a week. The one day this catches people out is the airport pickup with all seven aboard and every case full at once. If that's your trip, plan on a roof box or a second vehicle for the overflow, the same as with any seven-seat SUV.

Fuel, heat and running a full-size 4x4

A two-and-a-half-tonne V8 is not a fuel-economy car, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The combined figure lands around 14 L/100km, but real consumption in Dubai traffic with the AC working hard tends to sit closer to 16 or 17. The 140-litre tank makes that manageable, giving you several days between fills even with a heavy right foot.

This fleet's Patrol is white, a genuine help through July. A pale body reflects more heat than a dark one, so the panels and roof stay cooler after hours in a parking lot and the compressor isn't starting from as deep a hole. A cabin this size still bakes through the glass regardless of paint, though. Climb back in after a few hours in the sun and it takes a couple of minutes of strong front vents working before it's properly cool, and rear vents mean the second and third rows aren't stuck with whatever warm air the front seats leave behind.

Size shapes where you park. At just over 5.1 metres long and close to two metres wide, this isn't a car for the tight end bay near the trolley return, and the reverse camera earns its keep in a multi-storey. The 275 mm of ground clearance pays that back on the road, turning speed bumps and steep mall ramps into things you stop noticing, and off the tarmac it's real capability, provided you drop tyre pressures, carry recovery gear and go out with someone who knows the route. Who should rent it, and who should size down

Book the Patrol 2022 if you're a large family or a group with real luggage, or if your week genuinely mixes highway driving, seven passengers and a run out to the sand. Few rentals in Dubai handle that combination this comfortably, and the V8 makes the long stretches on Sheikh Zayed Road feel short. Just build the mileage into your plan before you go, given how fast the extra-km rate adds up.

Size down if it's one or two of you doing city errands and the odd airport run. You'll be parking a five-metre SUV, feeding a big V8, and carrying the risk of that AED 10 overage, for a job a mid-size crossover handles for less money and less worry about the odometer. The Patrol earns its size back on the week that actually needs seven seats, real 4x4 hardware and distance covered without watching the clock. On any other week, it's more truck, and more mileage risk, than the trip calls for.
