A black Nissan Patrol 2020 costs you something in a Dubai summer: the panels run hotter after a few hours in open sun than the same car in white, and the cabin needs a little longer under the AC before it is properly comfortable. What you get in return is not just presence in the school car park. This is the Y62-generation Patrol, a genuine body-on-frame 4x4 with a low-range transfer case, so a week that actually includes Hatta or a dune track is within reach in a way most SUVs on a rental fleet cannot manage. We get it to your door in one to two hours, and this page is about deciding whether that trade, extra heat for real capability, is the one your week needs.
This 2020 Patrol carries the facelifted Y62 body, the same platform Nissan ran through several more model years before the redesigned car arrived later. Under the hood is a 5.6-litre V8 making 400 hp at 5,800 rpm and 560 Nm at 4,000 rpm, sent through a seven-speed automatic to Nissan's All-Mode 4WD system with a proper low-range transfer case rather than a dial that only pretends to change anything. It gets to 100 km/h in around 6.6 seconds despite weighing over two and a half tonnes, and on Sheikh Zayed Road that reserve means overtaking happens on a light push of the pedal, not a downshift and a wait.
Switch into low range and the difference from a soft-road crossover shows immediately on loose sand or a rutted Hatta track, where the Patrol keeps momentum instead of spinning a wheel and stopping. It is still a skill, not a button. Drop your tyre pressures before you leave the tarmac and go with someone who knows the route if the dunes are the plan. One thing worth confirming before you book: a share of 2020 Patrols in the GCC run a 4.0-litre V6 instead of this V8, a competent engine but a noticeably calmer one. If the V8 and the low range are why you want this car, ask us to confirm the engine on your unit.

Seven seats, and the middle row is wide enough for three across or two adults with room to stretch. It slides and tips forward on its own, so reaching the third row does not mean climbing over anything, and two adults can actually sit back there for a real drive rather than the short run to the mall.
Cargo needs a little planning rather than assuming it will just work out. With all seven seats up, the boot behind the third row takes a couple of soft bags and maybe a stroller, not a stack of hard suitcases for a full car. Fold one side of the third row down and there is a proper load bay for cases while five or six people still travel. Take the row out entirely and it swallows a family's luggage for a week with space left over. The day that catches people out is the one where every seat is filled and every case is packed at once, and for most bookings, city errands, a school run, an airport pickup, that day does not come up.
The heat cost from the opening is real but manageable. Dark paint absorbs more sun than pale paint, so this Patrol's roof and bonnet run hotter to the touch after a July afternoon parked outside than a white one would. The interior gets warm regardless of the car's colour once the sun has had a few hours through the glass, but the black car starts a notch worse. Climb back in, run the front vents hard for a couple of minutes, and the cabin drops to comfortable well before you have finished pulling out of the bay. The rear vents are properly fed too, so the third row is not left with whatever warm air drifts back from the front.
Fuel follows the same honesty. The combined figure sits around 14 L/100km, but stop-start Dubai traffic with the air conditioning working flat out tends to push real consumption toward 16 or 17. The 140-litre tank absorbs that gap well, covering several days of ordinary driving before you need to think about a station again. Mileage is the figure to plan around on this car. The daily allowance is 250 km, and every kilometre past that costs AED 0.5. City errands and airport runs sit comfortably inside that limit, but a full day out toward Hatta and back can close the gap faster than people expect, so it is worth tallying the route before you leave rather than finding the overage at drop-off. You will need to be 25 to take the keys, and Salik tolls and any RTA fines land on you as the renter, the same as with any car we hand over.
Parking rewards the same patience the paint does. At just over 5.1 metres long, the Patrol wants a full bay rather than the gap near the trolley return, and a Marina tower ramp is better handled slowly than confidently. The 275 mm of ground clearance pays that back everywhere else, turning speed bumps and steep mall ramps into things you stop noticing.
Book this Patrol if your week genuinely mixes a full car of passengers, real luggage and a day where the low range gets used, not just admired. The V8 and the 4x4 hardware are not there for show, and a family or group heading to Hatta with everyone and their bags in tow gets a car that will not run out of ability before the trip does. You will need to be 25 to rent it, and the AED 0.5 per-km overage rewards a bit of route planning rather than punishing it.
Look elsewhere if it is one or two of you doing errands with the odd airport pickup, or if the extra minute of cabin cooldown a black car needs matters more to you than the paint's looks, in which case ask about a white unit on the same platform. You would otherwise be parking a five-metre SUV and feeding a thirsty V8 for a job a mid-size crossover does on less fuel and less patience. This Patrol earns its size and its heat penalty back on the week that actually needs seven seats and a run into the sand, not as a default because it looks the part in every photo.
