What the low rate actually buys

You're renting simplicity. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine makes 78 hp, drives the front wheels through an automatic, and asks very little of you or the fuel station. Top speed is rated at 170 km/h, which tells you everything: there's enough for Dubai's roads and no more. Nobody rents an Attrage to be quick.

What you get instead is a car that's genuinely cheap to keep moving and effortless to place in traffic. For a week of commuting and errands, that combination is worth more than a few extra horsepower you'd rarely use.

Fuel economy and how often you'll fill up

The 42-litre tank is the number that decides a rental here. With economy in the low twenties of kilometres per litre in the city, a week of normal driving usually needs a single fill and no more. Do the school run, hit the mall, cross town a few times, and the needle barely shifts.

Push onto the highway for a careful long run and a tank can stretch close to 700 km, though sitting in Marina traffic with the AC on full will trim that. Either way, this is the kind of car where you forget which petrol station you last used. That's the point of it.

Will your luggage fit

More than you'd expect. The boot holds 450 litres, large for a small sedan, and it's the reason we happily send this car on DXB and DWC runs. Two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags load without wrestling, and the flat floor and wide opening make it easy. A hatchback of the same size would have you folding a seat down for the same load.

For a couple collecting bags from the airport, few cars this cheap swallow luggage as readily. It's the older Attrage's quiet strength.

Heat, parking and the Dubai rules

In summer the small cabin cools fast. Once the front vents get going you're comfortable within minutes of pulling out of a hot car park, quicker than any large SUV manages. There are no rear vents, so on the worst afternoons back-seat passengers wait a little longer, but the short cabin means cold air reaches them soon enough. Leave it in shade when you can.

Parking is the easy part. At 1670 mm wide with 170 mm of clearance, it tucks into tight bays, clears speed bumps and mall ramps without scraping, and makes U-turns feel routine. On the E11 it cruises at 120 calmly, but overtaking at speed needs planning rather than a stab of the throttle. For a daily commute and the occasional Abu Dhabi trip it's fine. A full car on fast highway miles all week is where you'd want more.

One note on the rules: Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you, seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a child seat, which we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who should step up

Rent the Attrage 2022 if you want the lowest possible running and rental cost for one or two people, you're doing mostly city driving and airport runs, and you value a boot that carries more than its size suggests. For that renter it's one of the smartest-value cars in Dubai, and the older year saves you money the newer plate doesn't justify for city use.

Step up to a City or a Corolla if you regularly carry four adults at highway speed, want a more refined and quieter cabin, or care how the car feels to drive. The Attrage is plain plastics and a modest engine, and it never pretends otherwise. But for cheap, reliable, easy transport with a genuinely useful boot, it's hard to beat what this one costs.
