Want one of the cheapest cars to run in Dubai without putting money down first? We rent the Mitsubishi Attrage 2021 with a no-deposit option, and for a lot of renters that alone settles it. This is a small four-door sedan on an older-year rate, the kind of car you book when the job is plain: get to work, do the school run, fetch people from the airport, and spend as little as possible doing it. It sips fuel, parks anywhere, and asks nothing of you. What it is not is a refined or quick car. Read on and I'll tell you where it shines and where you should pay more for something nicer.
The Attrage is a value commuter, full stop. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder makes 80 hp through an automatic gearbox, which is enough to keep up with traffic and nothing more. It's front-wheel drive, light, and tuned for economy rather than punch. On Sheikh Zayed Road it'll sit at 120 all day without drama, but plan your overtakes. Drop into the throttle to pass a truck and the little engine takes a beat to gather itself. Above 100 it gets vocal and you feel it working.
Inside, set your expectations. Cloth seats, hard plastics, a basic screen, and physical AC dials. Nobody buys an Attrage for the cabin, and you shouldn't rent it expecting one. For a solo commuter or a couple, it's perfectly comfortable. The point of this car is the bill at the end of the week, not the trim.
| Spec | Mitsubishi Attrage 2021 |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Economy sedan |
| Engine | 1.2L petrol, 80 hp |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 450 litres |
| Fuel economy | About 20 km/L (maker), nearer 17 in real Dubai use |
| Fuel tank | 42 litres |
| Range | Roughly 700 km per tank |
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | 4245 × 1670 × 1515 mm |
| Ground clearance | 170 mm |
| 0 to 100 km/h | About 14 seconds |
| Top speed | 170 km/h |
This is the Attrage's real argument. Mitsubishi quotes around 20 km per litre, and while you won't hit that in Dubai stop-and-go and AC running flat out, mid-to-high teens is normal. Call it 17 in honest mixed driving. With a 42-litre tank, a careful commuter gets close to 700 km between fills, and even a heavy week of city errands keeps you out of the petrol station longer than almost anything else at this price. Two fills a fortnight is realistic for a daily driver. If your week is mostly short hops around your neighbourhood, you might fill once and forget about it.
That frugality is the whole reason to choose this car over a bigger sedan. Fuel is cheap here, but a thirsty car still adds up over a month, and the Attrage simply doesn't.
The number people don't expect: 450 litres. For a car this small, that's a genuinely useful boot, bigger than plenty of cars a class up. Two large suitcases plus a couple of cabin bags go in without a fight, which makes the Attrage a sensible DXB or DWC pickup for a couple or a small family travelling light. Four adults with four big cases is where it gets tight, and that's your cue to size up. But for an airport run with a normal amount of luggage, it does the job and barely sips fuel getting there.
Rear seat room is fine for two adults on a short hop and snug for three across. Kids are no problem. If you're regularly carrying four grown adults on longer trips, this isn't the car.
Small footprint, light steering, and a tidy turning circle make the Attrage easy to live with in Dubai. Tight multi-storey bays, Marina ramps, mall car parks, those U-turns on the main roads, none of it is a struggle. At 170 mm the ground clearance is enough for the speed bumps and ramps you meet every day, so you're not wincing every time the road rises.
The heat is the honest caveat. The AC cools a small cabin reasonably well once it's moving, but after a car has been baking in a 45-degree car park, give it a few minutes with the fan up before it's truly comfortable. There are front vents only, no rear outlets, so back-seat passengers wait a little longer for the cold air to reach them. Park in shade when you can and it's a non-issue.
Two quick things. Salik tolls are on you, the renter, so factor in the gates you cross on your commute. Any RTA fines during the rental pass to you as well, so mind the speed cameras on the E11. Seat belts are mandatory front and back. None of this is unusual, but it catches first-time visitors off guard.
Rent the Attrage if you want the cheapest sensible automatic in Dubai and your driving is commuting, errands, and the occasional light airport run. As a solo driver or a couple watching the budget, you'll struggle to find anything that costs less to run or parks more easily. It does exactly one thing, and it does it well.
Step up if you want more. Carrying four adults regularly, doing long highway stretches where you'll want stronger overtaking, or you simply want a cabin that feels less basic? Move up to a Honda City. It's roomier, quieter, and noticeably better on the motorway, and it's worth the difference for those drivers. But if your honest answer is "I just need cheap, reliable wheels for the week," the Attrage 2021 is the bargain that makes sense.
