The 2022 Cooper is a compact premium hatch with a turbocharged engine, a go-kart feel through corners, and a cabin that's a clear cut above the usual economy runabout. Our take: it's the car to pick if you want personality and easy city driving for a week, and you're not trying to move a family or their luggage. It's small inside, and we'll be honest about that.

What makes the Cooper worth it

The Cooper drives like nothing else at this size. The steering is quick and direct, the body stays flat through a roundabout, and the small turbo engine pulls eagerly from low down. It feels alive in a way budget hatches never do. In stop-and-go traffic around Downtown or the Marina that liveliness translates into a car that's genuinely easy and quick to place, darting into gaps and slotting into bays a bigger car would miss.

The cabin is the other half of the appeal. The materials, the round centre display and the toggle switches feel premium rather than cheap, and after a week in a plain economy car the difference is obvious the moment you climb in. You're paying for character and quality here, not space, so book it for the right reasons.

Boot, seats and who actually fits

This is the honest part. The Cooper seats five on paper, but the back is best treated as space for two adults on short hops or for kids. Two adults up front have plenty of room and a great driving position. Squeeze four grown-ups in for a city dinner run and it works; ask the same four to sit there for an hour on the highway and the back row will be ready to get out.

The boot is small at 278 litres, which is roughly one large case plus a soft bag for two people travelling light. Drop the rear seats and it opens up to 941 litres, enough for a flat-pack run or a weekend's gear once the back passengers are out. For an airport pickup with two people and modest luggage it's fine. For a family of four with full suitcases, this is the point where we'd tell you to size up to a proper hatchback or a small SUV.

Fuel and running costs across a week

The turbo is efficient as well as eager, with a combined figure around 6 litres per 100 km. The tank is small at 40 litres, so on heavy daily city driving you'll fill up a little more often than in a bigger-tanked car, but the low consumption keeps the cost down each time. For a normal week of commuting and errands you're looking at one fill, maybe a top-up if you're doing daily airport runs. It's a cheap car to keep moving despite the premium feel.

Parking, ramps and the low ride

At just over four metres long and narrow with it, the Cooper is one of the easiest cars to park in the city. Tight multi-storey bays, the steep Marina ramps and packed mall car parks barely register. The thing to watch is the low ride. At 143 mm of clearance it sits close to the road, so take Dubai's taller speed bumps and sharp mall entrances slowly to avoid scraping the nose. On the E11 that low stance pays off as stability, and it cruises happily at highway speed, though wind and road noise are more present than in a larger car.

Staying cool in the heat

The small cabin is an advantage when it's 45 degrees outside. There's not much air to chill, so once the AC is running it brings a parked Cooper down to comfortable quickly, and the front vents hit hard. Give it a minute on full after it's baked in a car park and it settles fast. As with most cars this size, back-seat passengers feel the cooling slightly later, so on the worst afternoons start it before you load anyone in.

Salik tolls run on your account as you pass the gantries during the rental, and any RTA fines pass to you, so watch the camera zones on Sheikh Zayed Road. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child under four needs a proper child seat, which we can fit before delivery if you ask.

Look elsewhere if you need to carry four adults in comfort, haul a week of luggage, or spend serious time on rough ground where the low clearance gets in the way.
