Not many crossovers give you this much metal and kit for the daily rate the MG RX5 2024 books at, which is the whole reason we keep it on the rack. It's a mid-size family SUV that costs closer to a compact one to rent, and we'll bring it to your door in Dubai within one to two hours of booking. You get a turbocharged engine, a proper boot and a long equipment list at the cheap end of the SUV shelf. This page settles one decision. Whether that space and kit are worth renting over a better-known badge, or whether the badge is worth paying up for.
The RX5's headline trick is the engine. It's a 1.5-litre turbo four making 169 hp and 275 Nm, driving the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. That torque figure is the part that matters, because most crossovers at this rate run a naturally aspirated 1.5 with 40 or 50 Nm less to give. On paper and on Sheikh Zayed Road, the RX5 has more in reserve for a loaded overtake than a Creta or a Seltos does, and it doesn't run out of puff above 100 the way a small city engine can.
The dual-clutch gearbox is the trade-off. It shifts crisply once you're moving, but at crawling pace in mall traffic it can feel a touch hesitant off the line, the way most dual-clutch units do. You get used to it inside a day. What you don't get, whatever the listing says, is all-wheel drive. This is a front-wheel-drive road crossover, so treat the height as a better view and easier speed-bump clearance, not a licence for soft sand.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder |
| Power | 169 hp / 275 Nm |
| Transmission | 7-speed dual-clutch automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 430 litres |
| Fuel economy | 6.8 L/100km claimed combined |
| Fuel tank | 55 litres |
| Range | roughly 650 km in city use |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,571 x 1,855 x 1,719 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,708 mm |
| Ground clearance | 183 mm |
| Colour | White |
This is where the RX5 earns its keep. The 2,708 mm wheelbase is long for the class, and it shows in the back seat: two adults stretch out for a full day, and three kids fit across for the school run without a fight. Up front the raised seating gives the commanding view people rent a crossover for in the first place.
The boot holds 430 litres, which is honest mid-size space. A DXB or DWC pickup for two with a week of luggage takes two large cases and a soft bag with the seats up. Fold the rear bench and the floor opens right up for flatpack furniture or a couple of bikes. It's not a seven-seater, so if you're regularly moving four adults and all their airport cases at once, that's the ceiling of a car this size.
Parking asks for a little more care than a compact crossover. At 4.57 metres the RX5 is longer than a Creta or a Seltos, so tight Marina tower bays and mall multi-storey slots want a moment's thought rather than a careless swing. The 183 mm of ground clearance clears speed bumps and steep ramps cleanly, so you're not wincing at every car park entrance. Point it at a dune, though, and the front-wheel drive settles the question for you. It belongs on tarmac.
For a turbo SUV the RX5 is cheap to feed. MG quotes about 6.8 litres per 100 km combined. Real Dubai driving runs thirstier, because the AC works flat out and traffic rarely flows, so budget closer to 8 or 9. The 55-litre tank still gives roughly 650 km of city running, which for a normal week of commuting and errands is one visit to the pump, maybe two if you're driving in from the far suburbs daily.
Mileage is worth reading before you book. The daily allowance is 250 km, plenty for city life, and it's AED 0.5 per kilometre beyond that, so a day out to Hatta and back needs a glance at the odometer. Salik tolls and any RTA fines fall to you as the renter, the same as every car here.
The AC is what counts in July, and the RX5's mid-size cabin cools at a sensible pace. It won't chill as fast as a tiny hatch with less air to move, but the front vents pull a baked interior down to bearable within a few minutes of climbing back in on a 45-degree afternoon. Inside, MG has spent the money on the screen and the kit list rather than the plastics, so the cabin feels well equipped rather than plush. Across a week or a month that's an easy trade to live with.
Rent the RX5 if you want the most crossover for the fewest dirhams: real family space, a turbo with genuine highway pull, and a long kit list at a rate that undercuts the established names. A couple or a small family doing malls, the school run and the odd airport pickup will get everything they need, and the turbo makes it a more relaxed motorway car than most rivals near this price.
Pay up for a mainstream badge in two cases. If you want the settled reliability reputation and dealer familiarity that a Hyundai Creta or a Kia Seltos carries, that peace of mind is worth the small premium to some renters, and both feel a shade more polished inside. And if your week involves dunes or Hatta trails rather than the blacktop, none of these front-wheel-drive crossovers is the car. You want a proper 4x4. For most families booking an SUV in Dubai on a budget, though, the RX5 gives you more room and more engine than the money usually buys. You'll need to be 25 to take the keys.
