What's under the bonnet, and how it drives

This is an early car in the MG 5 line, from before MG nudged the same 1.5-litre engine to a slightly higher output in later model years. At launch it was rated at 110 hp and 150 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic with a manual shift mode if you want to hold a gear on a ramp. That's enough to keep up with Dubai traffic and pull away from a red light without drama, but it's not a car built for quick overtakes. On Sheikh Zayed Road it settles in fine up to around 100 km/h. Push past that with a full car and a loaded boot, and the CVT needs a moment to find the right point in its range before it responds.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

The 512-litre boot is the number that sells this car once people see it in person. It beats a Nissan Sunny or a Toyota Yaris sedan by a clear margin and takes two large cases plus a soft bag for a DXB or DWC airport run without anyone having to repack at the kerb. The 2,680 mm wheelbase carries into the back seat, where two adults get real legroom on a longer drive and three fit across for a shorter mall trip. A couple with two kids and a week of errands has room to spare here, cases included.

Where the MG 5 shows its price is what your hands touch rather than what the tape measure says. The plastics are firmly budget grade, and nothing about the cabin pretends otherwise. You're buying space and a straightforward layout, not a soft-touch dashboard. Parking is easy at 4,601 mm long and 1,818 mm wide, small enough for a Marina tower bay or a mall's multi-storey slot without any careful reversing. It sits low, so ease off on steep ramp entries into a basement car park rather than carrying speed in.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

MG quotes combined economy around 5 litres per 100 km for this engine, and treat that as an optimistic factory number rather than a promise. Stop-and-go city driving with the air conditioning working through a Dubai afternoon uses more, though the 45-litre tank still covers most of a week between fill-ups. This particular rental includes 4,500 km for the whole booking, not per day, which is comfortable for a week of city errands and airport runs but worth tracking on a longer stay. Go past it and extra kilometres cost AED 3.0 each, a steep rate next to the age minimum this car offers, so it pays to check your odometer partway through a longer rental rather than at the end. The cabin is compact, which works in its favour after it's sat in the sun. Climb back in on a 45-degree afternoon and the front vents pull the worst of the heat out within a few minutes, helped by the silver paint, which reflects more than a dark colour would. There's no rear climate vent and no clever cooling trick beyond a straightforward AC unit doing its job once you're moving, which is normal for the class. Who should rent it, and who should size up

Size up if your trip means covering serious distance. A one-way run to Abu Dhabi and back, repeated a few times over a longer rental, chews through 4,500 km faster than it looks on paper, and AED 3.0 a kilometre adds up once you're over. The same goes if you want confident overtaking pace on the highway or a cabin that feels worth more than the rate. For straightforward city use within a sensible mileage budget, though, this is one of the easiest ways into a five-seat automatic in Dubai, and the age 20 minimum is a real advantage most of the competition doesn't offer.
