We hand over the MG 5 2020 across Dubai with payment sorted the way you want it on the spot, card, cash, or a wallet tap from Apple Pay or Google Pay when the driver arrives. That flexibility matters on a car like this, because the MG 5 is the rental you take when the budget is tight and you still want a proper sedan boot and a back seat that holds three. It's a cheap, roomy compact at an older-year rate. The trade is a modest engine and plain plastics, neither of which bothers most people for a week of commuting and airport runs. This page is about who that trade suits and who should pay more for a Corolla instead.
The 5 is a real four-door sedan, not a stretched hatchback. At 4,601 mm long it sits in the same footprint as a Corolla or an Elantra, and the cabin shows it. Two adults up front and three across the back fit without anyone folding in, and rear headroom is honest rather than apologetic.
The engine is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol making 112 hp, paired to a CVT automatic driving the front wheels. That's enough for what a city sedan does. It pulls away cleanly and never feels strained around town. Ask it to surge past 120 km/h for an overtake and the CVT lets the revs climb before the speed does, which is the honest limit of a budget engine. Plan the move a second earlier and it's a non-issue.

This is where the MG 5 earns its keep. The boot is large for the class, and on a DXB or DWC run it swallows two large suitcases plus a couple of cabin bags without anyone riding with luggage on their lap. A family of four with a week's bags loads it and still has the back seat clear. If you regularly move four adults and all their cases, the 5 does that better than most cars renting at this rate. Fold the rear seats and you get enough room for a flat-pack run, which the typical hatchback at this price can't match.
Ignore the optimistic brochure economy. In real Dubai driving, a mix of Sheikh Zayed Road cruising and stop-start city traffic, you'll see around 12 km/L. On the 45-litre tank that's roughly 500 to 550 km between fills, so a normal commuting week is one visit to the pump, maybe two if you're doing daily airport runs. The 5 takes regular petrol, which keeps the running cost where it should be for a car you rented to save money.
One thing to keep on your radar: every Salik gantry you pass is billed to you, and any RTA fine or speed-camera flash during the rental comes back to you, not us. Seatbelts front and rear, as always.
Park a dark-coloured 5 in open sun in July and the cabin bakes like any car here. The AC is a conventional single-zone system with strong front vents, and it pulls a parked cabin down to comfortable in a few minutes of driving with the fan up. There are no rear vents, so on a 45-degree afternoon the back seats take longer than the front. For two people commuting it's a non-issue. With kids in the back on a long midday drive, give it a head start before you load everyone in.
Parking is a quiet strength. Light steering and a tidy turning circle make Marina ramps, tight multi-storey bays, and mall U-turns all undramatic. The 118 mm ground clearance is normal sedan height, fine for speed bumps if you take the steeper ramps at a sensible angle. This is not a car for sand or rough tracks, and it doesn't pretend to be.
For the daily commute up and down the E11, the 5 is comfortable and quiet enough at 100 to 120 km/h. The ride is settled and the seats hold up for an hour in traffic. Where you feel the budget is refinement: the plastics are hard and there's more engine drone under hard acceleration than you'd get in a Corolla or Elantra. None of that affects how the car gets you to work. It just isn't plush.
Rent the MG 5 if you want the most sedan for the least money. For a commuter, a small family doing mall and airport runs, or anyone who needs a big boot on a budget, it's hard to beat at this older-year rate, and the unfamiliar badge means nothing on a car you're giving back in a week. If your priority is a quieter, more polished cabin and stronger resale-grade refinement, step up to a Toyota Corolla or Hyundai Elantra and pay the difference. And if you're four adults heading into the desert or to Hatta, this isn't the car, take a crossover. For everything in between, the 5 does the job and leaves money in your pocket.
