Most Cyberster bookings we take are for a single evening. A couple wants the coast road after dark, or someone wants the doors raised outside a hotel entrance for photographs, and the car comes back the next morning. The argument on this page is a simple one. This is a two seat electric roadster you book for the drive and the occasion, and if you also need to move people or bags, it will not do both jobs.

What two motors and no gearbox feel like

There is no build up. Two motors, 510 hp and 725 Nm, a single speed transmission and nothing to wait for, so the Cyberster goes the instant you ask. MG quotes 3.2 seconds to 100 km/h. What that translates to here is that a short slip road onto Sheikh Zayed Road stops being a calculation, and an overtake at 100 has happened before you have finished deciding to make it.

It is not a delicate lightweight. With the battery under the floor the car weighs close to two tonnes, and you feel that in quick direction changes more than you do in a straight line. The upside of all that mass sitting low is a car that stays flat and settled at speed, which suits the E11 far better than it would suit a tight mountain road. Top speed is capped at 210 km/h, which matters to nobody driving legally in the UAE.

The silence is the part people do not expect. Roof down at 80 km/h you hear wind and tyre noise and very little else, and you can hold a conversation without raising your voice. If the sound of a V8 is what you are paying for, this is the wrong roadster.

Doors, ramps and what actually fits

The scissor doors are the first thing you will have to think about. They rise rather than swing outwards, which is an advantage in a narrow multi storey bay, because you need almost no room beside the car to get out. The trade is overhead. Look at the ceiling, the pipework and any valet canopy before you press the button, and in a low basement park at the end of a row rather than under a duct.

Then there is the nose. Around 116 mm of ground clearance is very little, and with two people aboard it is less again. Steep mall entrances and the harder residential speed bumps need to be taken slowly, and on the worst of them at a slight angle. A Cyberster driven at a driveway the way you would drive a crossover will make a noise you do not want to hear.

Luggage is 249 litres and it sits behind the cabin, so there is no deep boot waiting for your hard cases. Two soft holdalls, or one cabin case and a backpack, is the honest limit. That covers a night away or a DXB collection for two people travelling light. It does not cover a family arriving for a week.

Charging it, and paying for the roads

Charging is CCS2, so DEWA's Green Charger points and the usual mall and hotel units all work. On a 144 kW DC charger MG quotes about 38 minutes from 10 to 80 percent, which is roughly a coffee. On a 7 kW wall box it becomes an overnight job, closer to 12 hours from low, so the sensible pattern on a short rental is to plug in wherever you sleep and keep fast charging as the backup.

Range deserves realism. The claimed WLTP figure for the twin motor car is 443 km. In a Dubai summer, with the air conditioning working hard and some of your driving done roof down, plan on something in the 300 to 350 km bracket instead. Your rental includes 300 km a day with extra distance at 0.5 AED per kilometre, so for most renters the battery, not the allowance, is what decides when the day ends.

Salik tolls register against the car and come back to you at the end of the rental, and any RTA fine during the period is yours to settle. Both seats have belts and both need to be worn, which in a two seater covers the entire cabin.

Timing the roof against the heat

The soft top folds away in around 10 seconds and works on the move up to about 50 km/h, so you are never locked into one decision for a whole drive.

Between November and March the roof can stay down for most of the day and the car makes complete sense. From roughly April to October it turns into a dawn and evening activity. That is not a criticism of the car, it is what 45 degrees does to any convertible. Roof down at 1pm in July stops being fun after about ten minutes, and the climate control spends the whole time fighting the sky.

Roof up, the small cabin works in your favour. There is very little air to cool, so after a long park in the sun it comes down quickly once you are rolling with the vents on full. The counterweight is the fabric roof itself, which soaks up heat in a way a metal one does not, so a Cyberster left in an open car park bakes harder than a coupe would. Park underground where you can. Running the air conditioning hard with the roof down also costs range, which is the other argument for the evening drive.

Who should rent it, and who should not

Rent the Cyberster if the car is the plan rather than the means. It suits a couple marking an occasion, a photo day, an evening coast run, or a driver curious about whether an electric sports car can still be exciting. It can, and the doors and the silence get more reaction than plenty of cars costing twice as much.

Skip it if you need it to be transport. Anyone carrying a third person, a family, real luggage or a week of commuting is asking a two seat roadster to be something it was never built to be, and a saloon or an SUV does that job better and for less money. If you want open air with passengers, a four seat convertible is the swap to make. Booking this one purely for the experience is a perfectly good reason to book it. Just do not book it expecting practicality it does not have.
