Most bookings for this car start the same way. Someone has just landed a job here, needs a month of driving before they commit to buying, and wants a boot that takes two suitcases without paying sedan-plus money. We rent the MG MG5 2024 across Dubai and bring it to your door in one to two hours, with 300 km a day included and a minimum age of 18 rather than the 21 most desks insist on. Against a Nissan Sunny or a Yaris sedan, the MG5 hands you more boot and more equipment for the same shape of budget. What it gives up is refinement, and this page is about whether that trade works for your week.
The MG5 runs a 1.5-litre four with a CVT, and the quoted figures for this generation split into roughly 8.1 L/100 km around town and 6.0 on the highway. Those numbers are honest, which is rarer than it sounds. In a Dubai July, with the AC working hard and half your driving spent crawling on Al Khail, the city figure is the one you'll live with.
With a 45-litre tank, that means somewhere between 550 and 650 km per fill depending on how much of your week is highway. For a normal pattern of commuting, groceries and the odd airport run, you're at the pump once a week. Two fills if you drive to Abu Dhabi and back.
The CVT deserves a word here, because it's doing most of the fuel-saving work. It keeps a modest engine sitting in its efficient band instead of hunting through gears, and in stop-start traffic it's noticeably less tiring than a torque-converter automatic that keeps shuffling between second and third.

512 litres is a lot of sedan boot at this end of the price list. It beats the Honda City, which we also rent, and it comfortably beats anything in the hatch class. In practice you get two large hard cases lying flat with room above them for a cabin bag, which covers a DXB or DWC pickup for a family of four without anyone holding a bag on their lap. The loading lip is low enough that you're not hoisting cases over a ledge.
The rear bench is helped by a 2680 mm wheelbase, so two adults sit behind two adults without negotiating. Three across the back works for a run to the mall and stops being pleasant after about forty minutes. That's normal for the class, not a mark against the car.
The MG5 has ordinary sedan cabin volume, so after a few hours parked in the sun it takes a couple of minutes of driving before the air turns properly cold. Front vent output is strong once it gets going. Drop the windows for the first thirty seconds after you open the doors and you'll clear the worst of the trapped air before the AC has to fight it. Nothing exotic, just the usual routine for a car that lives outdoors in a Dubai summer.
What you should know before you book is how the cabin reads. The screens and equipment level are generous for the money, and the plastics tell you where the money went instead. Hard, hollow surfaces on the doors and lower dash, seats that are fine rather than plush, and road noise that carries into the cabin more than it does in a Japanese rival. None of that stops the car doing its job. It's just the difference you'll notice if you've been driving something newer.
At 4601 mm the MG5 is a normal compact sedan footprint, which means Marina towers and older mall basements are manageable rather than easy. Reversing into a tight bay takes a bit of care and a look at the camera. It sits low, so take mall ramps and the sharper community speed bumps at a walking pace, and skip unpaved shortcuts entirely. This is not a car for sand or a rough Hatta track.
On Sheikh Zayed Road it cruises at 120 without complaint. Ask for a quick overtake and 118 hp through a CVT gives you the noise before it gives you the speed, so plan your moves rather than lean on them. Salik charges pass to you at each gate, and any RTA fine during your rental comes back to the renter, so the speed limits are worth watching on the E11 more than on any other road here.
Rent the MG MG5 2024 if you want the most boot and the most kit per dirham, you're doing city driving with airport runs attached, and you'd rather spend the difference on something other than door plastics. For a new arrival needing a month of easy, cheap-to-run transport, it's a straightforward yes.
Skip it if refinement is what you actually care about. A Yaris sedan or a City feels better built and quieter at speed, and if most of your week is highway running between emirates, that matters more than an extra six litres of boot. Skip it too if you need any ground clearance, since a low sedan is the wrong tool for anything off tarmac. For everyone else on a budget who still wants a real boot, the MG5 is the sensible pick, and we'll have it outside your building this afternoon.
