That gap is the whole argument for the 350. You get the same shape and the same interior as the pricier GLEs, and you hand back a far smaller fuel receipt.

Does the four-cylinder actually cope

This is the worry, and the honest answer is that it copes with everything a normal Dubai week throws at it. The 255 hp four pulls the GLE away from lights cleanly and cruises Sheikh Zayed Road with enough left for a standard overtake. Where you notice the missing cylinders is under a heavy load, uphill or fully packed with people and bags, when the nine-speed drops a gear or two and the engine gets busier than a six would. For airport transfers, school runs and highway miles it never feels short of breath. If you want the GLE to feel genuinely quick, that's the 450 or an AMG, and you'd rent up rather than fight the 350 for pace it was never tuned to give.

Seats, space and the family week

The 350 is a five-seater as standard, with an optional third row that makes it a seven. Book the seven only if you'll really use those back perches, because they're occasional seats for kids or short adult hops, and putting them up cuts into the boot. As a straight five-seater the second row is roomy, the load space is large, and four adults travel in real comfort with luggage for a DXB pickup going in without folding anything. Heat, and the size you park
