Behind the chrome grille and the hand-stitched cabin, the Mercedes G63 2025 hides a chassis that will climb a Hatta wadi and cross soft sand without breaking stride. We rent it across Dubai with doorstep delivery, and every booking includes 250 km a day, enough to reach the dunes and come back without watching the odometer. Most people rent this AMG for the way it looks parked outside a hotel. The more useful question is the one the spec sheet answers and the badge hides: this is one of very few luxury SUVs you can actually take off the tarmac and trust. That capability is what this page is about.
The G63 keeps a proper ladder-frame body and permanent all-wheel drive, but the part that matters off-road is the three locking differentials. Centre, rear, and front, each engaged by its own dash switch. Lock all three and the axles turn together no matter how little grip one wheel has. A soft-roader with clever electronics fakes this. The G does it mechanically.
There's also a low-range transfer case, which gears the V8 down for crawling up a rocky climb or easing through deep sand at walking pace. Ground clearance sits around 241 mm, and wading depth is rated at 700 mm, so a flooded underpass after a rare downpour or a shallow wadi crossing isn't a problem. For a Hatta day trip or a dune session, this is the genuine article, not a styling package.
Under the bonnet is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 making 585 horsepower, paired to a nine-speed automatic. It moves a 2.5-tonne SUV to 100 km/h in about 4.5 seconds, which on Sheikh Zayed Road means overtaking is instant and the car never feels strained at E11 cruising speeds. The noise alone is part of why people book it.
Now the honest part. This engine drinks. The official combined figure is around 15 L/100km, but nobody rents a G63 to drive gently, and in real city use with the air-conditioner flat out you should plan for high teens or low twenties. The 100-litre tank means a full fill goes a long way, but you'll still notice the fuel stops on a heavy week. If running cost is on your mind at all, this is the wrong car. That's just the deal you accept for what the G is.
| Class / body | Business SUV, 5 seats |
|---|---|
| Engine | 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 |
| Power | 585 hp |
| Transmission | 9-speed automatic |
| Drive | Permanent all-wheel drive, three locking differentials, low range |
| 0 to 100 km/h | 4.5 seconds |
| Fuel tank | 100 litres |
| Combined economy | about 15 L/100km (expect more in real use) |
| Ground clearance | about 241 mm |
| Wading depth | 700 mm |
The table is reference. The point is what those numbers let you do: the diff locks and low range turn a luxury truck into something that crosses sand, and the clearance keeps the underside off the rocks where softer SUVs scrape.
The G is tall, square, and wide. That upright shape gives you a commanding view over traffic and makes it easy to place on a wide road, but it works against you in a tight multi-storey. Marina basement bays and older mall ramps are snug, and the boxy nose means you judge the corners by feel until you're used to it. Reverse camera and sensors help, but don't expect it to slot into a tight bay the way a smaller SUV does.
Boot space is usable rather than huge. The square load area swallows two or three large cases plus soft bags, fine for an airport run to DXB or DWC with a family's luggage, though the high load lip means you lift bags up rather than slide them in.
Park a G63 in July sun and the cabin gets brutally hot, like any car here. The climate system pulls a parked cabin down quickly, with strong front vents and proper rear outlets, so a few minutes after you start it the interior is comfortable even at 45°C outside.
A few practical things pass to you, not us. Salik tolls on your route are the renter's cost, and any RTA fine, speed cameras included, comes back to whoever held the car. Enforcement here is strict and the G has more than enough power to get you in trouble, so watch the limits on the open E11. Seat belts are required in every seat and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours. Because of the vehicle's value, stricter security terms apply on a car at this level, so confirm the requirements when you book.
Rent the G63 if you want the status and you actually intend to use the off-road ability: a Hatta run, a desert camp, sand driving with friends who know the terrain. With three diff locks, low range, and real clearance, it earns its keep out there in a way almost nothing else in this price bracket does.
If you'll never leave the tarmac and you mostly care about a quiet, plush ride between hotels and Sheikh Zayed Road, a softer luxury SUV will be more comfortable, far easier to park, and much cheaper to fuel. The G63 is a serious off-roader wearing a tuxedo. Book it for what it can do, not just how it looks, and it's hard to beat.
