The harder question is whether you actually want this car for your week here. The G63 is one of the few boxy 4x4s that's genuinely capable off-road, yet almost nobody rents it for that. What the spec sheet doesn't tell you is the character. The G63 rides firm and upright, the steering is heavier than a modern SUV, and it thumps over sharp joints. None of that is a fault. It's a real ladder-frame off-roader wearing a couture suit, and you feel the frame.

The fuel bill is real

Let's not pretend. The V8 is thirsty, and stop-and-go traffic with the AC fighting 45°C heat pushes real consumption well past the combined figure. The 100-litre tank gives you genuine range, so you won't fill up every other day, but each fill is a big one. Fuel here is cheap by global standards, which softens it, but go in expecting a proper fuel habit. That's part of the deal, not a surprise.

Heat, the cabin and pulling it down at 45 degrees

The cabin is snug for a car this wide, which actually helps in summer. The AC cools it down quickly once you're moving, and there are rear vents for back-seat passengers, so a family of four or five isn't suffering in the second row. Parked outside a mall at midday, the leather gets hot and the first few minutes are loud with the blower on full, same as any SUV here. Give it a minute or two and it copes well. If you can, point the nose away from the afternoon sun.

Parking the box

This is where the G63 asks something of you. It's wide, it's tall, and the mirrors stick out. Marina towers and older mall car parks have tight bays and tighter ramps, and you'll use the cameras and sensors every single time. Reversing into a standard bay, you'll want both. This is where the G63 makes the most sense as a rental. Remember the renter covers Salik tolls, and any speed-camera fines and RTA penalties pass back to you, so keep an eye on the limits because this car gathers speed quietly and quickly. Belts are mandatory in all seats. For a DXB or DWC airport run it's comfortable and the boot swallows a couple of large cases plus soft bags, enough for two people on a longer trip or a family doing the weekly load. It's a five-seater, so don't plan around six.

The off-road no one uses

The irony of the G63 here is that it's a properly serious 4x4 with three locking differentials and real low-range ability, and almost no renter ever points it at sand. The clearance and the AWD mean it could handle Hatta trails and soft dunes far better than the crossovers people actually take out there. If desert capability is your reason, it delivers. For everyone else, it's capability you'll admire and never call on.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the G63 2024 if the statement is the point: the V8 soundtrack, the shape, arriving somewhere and being seen to arrive. It's also the right call if you genuinely want off-road ability with luxury, which is a rare combination. Accept the firm ride, the thirst and the width as the price of the experience, because they don't go away.

If you mainly want a calm, efficient way to move four or five people around for a week, this isn't it. A quieter luxury SUV rides softer, sips far less fuel and parks with less drama, and you won't lose much that matters on a normal trip. The G63 is a want, not a need. Rent it because you want exactly this car, not because you want a big Mercedes.
