A Mercedes G63 2024 is one of the newer examples on our Dubai fleet, and it sits right at the end of this V8's first chapter. Mercedes adds a 48-volt hybrid assist for 2025 to smooth out the low-rev lag, which makes this the last pure version of the engine before that change. This one is finished in grey, a shade that hides road film better than white and shrugs off the sun a little easier than black. We can have it at your door within one to two hours of booking. The real question isn't whether a G 63 gets noticed, every year does that, it's whether the newest pre-facelift version, in this colour, suits your week.
The engine is the reason this car exists, and on a 2024 example it comes with nothing added. It's a hand-built 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, the kind AMG still finishes with one technician's name on a plaque under the hood, sending 585 hp and 850 Nm through a nine-speed automatic and a permanent all-wheel-drive system with three locking differentials and a low-range gearbox. Zero to 100 km/h takes 4.5 seconds, a genuinely quick figure for something this shape and this heavy.
Where the 2024 differs from next year's car is what happens just off idle. The 2025 update adds a 48-volt system that fills that first moment with electric torque before the turbos spool up. This one doesn't have that. You get a beat of lag, then the V8 arrives all at once and shoves you back into the seat, and plenty of drivers actually prefer that rawer delivery to a smoothed-out one. Either way, the exhaust barks on a cold start, and a squeeze of throttle on Sheikh Zayed Road turns heads three lanes over.
Be honest about the rest of it. The steering is heavy and slow to answer, the tall body leans through roundabouts, and past 120 km/h the flat nose is visibly working against the wind. Underneath, the three diff locks and low range make this a genuine off-roader, more capable in sand than almost anything else in the fleet, but nobody should point a rented G 63 at the dunes. That capability rides along. It isn't the reason to book one for a week in the city.

Five people sit upright and comfortably, and the boot behind them holds 480 litres, enough for a family's luggage off a flight or a proper supermarket run, though not much more than that. The tailgate swings out sideways rather than lifting, with the spare wheel bolted to it, so leave space behind the car before you open it in a car park.
Width is what actually catches people out. Across the mirrors the G 63 measures close to 2.19 metres, which means folding them in and creeping through an older multi-storey or a tight valet lane. The flat sides at least make the corners easy to judge by eye. Ground clearance of 241 mm means speed bumps and steep mall ramps barely register, more than most SUVs in this class can say. Getting in is the part people forget to plan for. Even with the running boards, it's a proper step up, worth thinking about if you're travelling with young kids or anyone who'd rather not climb in heels.
The 100-litre tank drinks premium, and while Mercedes quotes a combined figure near 14.7 litres per 100 km, real city driving with the air conditioning working hard pushes that into the high teens. Plan on stopping for fuel more often than you would in almost anything else we rent. Your daily allowance is 250 kilometres, and every kilometre past that costs AED 0.5. Salik tolls and any RTA fines land on you as the renter, which is standard across the fleet, not something unique to this car.
Grey helps a little with the heat, though not as much as people assume. It reflects more sun than black does, so the cabin doesn't reach quite the same peak after a few hours parked outside, but the flat glass is still flat glass, and a July afternoon will still leave the seats hot to the touch. The climate system does the real work. It's strong from both rows, not a weak trickle to the back seats, and it pulls the cabin down to comfortable within a couple of minutes of climbing back in.
Renting a G 63 is a fairly simple trade once you see it clearly. You give up a soft ride, decent fuel economy and an easy time in tight parking, and in exchange you get a hand-built V8, a shape everyone in the car park recognises, and a grey finish that still looks expensive without shouting about it. That's a fair deal if the point of the week is arriving somewhere and being noticed, at a hotel, a wedding, a meeting where the car does some of the talking before you say a word.
It's the wrong deal if you actually need to relax. A Mercedes GLS or a Range Rover rides quieter, costs less to fill and swallows more luggage, and either one is the smarter choice for a family week or a long highway run to Abu Dhabi. This 2024 G 63, being a luxury rental, takes a refundable deposit, and you need to be at least 21 to collect the keys. Book it for the presence and the noise, not for comfort, and it will not disappoint you on either count.
