Width is what you plan your day around. Close to 2.2 metres across the mirrors means a real squeeze in a mall multi-storey or a valet lane laid out for saloons, and folding the mirrors becomes routine. The dead-straight sides at least make the corners easy to read. With 241 millimetres of clearance, speed bumps and steep ramp entrances don't register. The last thing to weigh is the climb: even with the running boards, getting in means hauling yourself up, which matters if you've got small kids or anyone in heels along for the night.

The ride never lets you forget the hardware. This pre-facelift car runs steel springs and adaptive dampers, no air suspension, so ridged tarmac and expansion joints thump through. It moves like the heavy, upright machine it is.

After a day baking in the sun

Leave a black G 63 out in a mid-40s afternoon and it soaks up heat fast. The dark paint gives nothing back, and the big upright glass traps it, so the first thing you meet climbing back in is a wall of warm air. The climate system copes well from there. It's strong front and rear, with proper vents feeding the back seats rather than a weak draught off the dash, and the cabin drops to comfortable inside a minute or two. The interior is where the price tag announces itself, and it feels like an event every time you get in, not only when the exhaust is loud.

Right car, wrong car

Running cost is the honest catch. The 100-litre tank drinks premium, and while the official combined figure sits near 14.7 litres per 100 km, real Dubai city driving with the AC flat out drags it into the high teens, so budget for regular stops. Rent the G 63 AMG if presence is the entire point: the hand-built V8, the noise, and a silhouette that owns any forecourt in the city. For arriving somewhere and being noticed, across one night or a full week, nothing in the class comes near it.
