The price of that noise

That V8 has a cost, and it is not a one-time one. Fitting it into Dubai parking

The G 63 is a genuinely wide car, close to 2.2 metres across the mirrors, and that is the number that decides how your week goes in a multi-storey. Older mall car parks and tight Marina towers mean folding the mirrors in and taking corners slowly rather than trusting the gap by eye. The flat, dead-straight sides help you judge the edges, at least, which takes some of the guesswork out of it. Ground clearance of 241 mm makes speed bumps and steep ramp entrances a non-issue, no scraping and no creeping over them at an angle the way lower cars have to.

Behind the rear seats there is 480 litres of boot, enough for two large cases and a couple of soft bags off a flight. The tailgate swings out sideways with the spare wheel bolted to it rather than lifting up, so park somewhere you can open it wide before you start loading. The last thing to plan for is the climb aboard. Even with the running boards fitted, getting in is a proper step up, worth a thought if you are lifting a small child into the back seat or arriving somewhere in heels.

The heat, the cabin and who should book it

Leave a black G 63 in an open lot through a Dubai afternoon and it holds onto that heat. The dark paint gives nothing back to the sun, and the amount of upright glass this car carries turns the cabin into a genuine oven within an hour or two. Climb back in and the first breath is warm and heavy. The recovery is fast, though. The climate system is strong front and rear, with proper vents feeding the second row rather than a weak trickle off the dash, and it pulls the cabin down to comfortable within a couple of minutes of pulling away. Park in shade or a basement level when you get the choice, and the difference on your return is easy to feel.

Weigh all of it together and the decision is straightforward. Book the G 63 AMG if the V8 and the reaction it gets are worth the fuel bills, the firm ride and the climb up into the cabin. Nothing else in the class sounds like it or gets looked at like it, and for a week where the car itself is part of the plan, that is worth paying for. Size up or across if you would rather not pay that price. A Range Rover or a Mercedes GLS rides softer, drinks less and swallows more luggage, and either makes the better choice for long highway stretches or a week spent mostly ferrying a family around.
