Day to day, it copes better than it looks

For all the drama, the G 63 handles ordinary errands more easily than the shape suggests. There are five proper seats, upright and roomy, and you sit high enough to read the traffic well ahead, which makes placing this much metal less nerve-racking than the width implies. Behind the rear seats there's 480 litres of boot, fine for a weekly grocery run or a couple of large cases with soft bags stacked around them. The catch is the tailgate: it swings sideways with the spare wheel bolted to it rather than lifting up, so park where you've got room to open it wide.

The width is the thing you plan around. It's close to 2.2 metres across the mirrors, so a tight multi-storey bay means folding them in and easing through. Be honest about the rest. The steering is slow and heavy, the tall body leans in bends, and above 120 the flat front is clearly wrestling the wind. A Range Rover or a Mercedes GLS rides softer, stays quieter, uses less fuel and holds more luggage, which makes either the smarter call for long highway runs or a week of ferrying a family about.
