A Mercedes G63 2021 in Dubai announces itself before it's gone anywhere. Turn the key on this black G 63 AMG and the exhaust cracks hard against whatever's parked behind you, a cold-start ritual that has nothing to do with arriving somewhere and everything to do with what happens once you're actually driving it. That's the angle worth taking here, not the forecourt moment everyone already expects, but what a week behind the wheel is really like once the doors shut and it's just you, the V8 and Sheikh Zayed Road ahead. We deliver it to your hotel, villa or the airport, usually within one to two hours of booking, and the rest of this page settles whether the trade this car asks of you, noise for comfort and thirst for drama, actually suits your week.
Every G 63 in this generation shares the same heart: a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that AMG still builds by hand, one technician assembling and signing each engine before it leaves the factory. This 2021 car makes 585 hp and 850 Nm, sent through a nine-speed automatic to a permanent 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system with three locking differentials and a low-range gearbox. It's the pre-facelift car, built years before Mercedes added the 48-volt mild-hybrid assist to the 2025 model, so there's a genuine beat of turbo lag off idle before the V8 lands. That gap is part of the character. You feel the boost build, then it arrives all at once and hauls two and a half tonnes to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.
None of that number is really why you notice it, though. Cold-start it in a quiet basement car park and the exhaust cracks loud enough that heads turn before you've moved. Lift off hard in Sport and it pops on the overrun. Squeeze the throttle on an open stretch of the E11 and the V8 pulls with a low, mechanical growl that a newer, hybrid-smoothed G 63 doesn't quite replicate. If the sound is the actual reason you're renting this year over a 2025, that instinct is correct.
Be honest about the rest of the driving experience too. The steering is heavy and slow to load up, the tall body leans through roundabouts, and past 120 km/h the flat, upright nose is visibly working against the wind. Underneath sits a genuine 4x4, capable in sand with those diff locks and the low-range box, but nobody rents a G 63 to dune-bash, and this one shouldn't be the exception.

Away from the noise, the G 63 is more usable day to day than its shape suggests. Five seats sit upright with real head room front and back, and the high driving position makes placing this much metal through traffic less stressful than the width implies. Behind the rear seats there's 480 litres of boot, enough for one large case and a couple of soft bags off a DXB or DWC run, not a full family's luggage for a week away. The tailgate is the quirk worth learning early: it swings out sideways with the spare wheel bolted to it, rather than lifting up, so leave real space behind the car before you reverse into a bay.
Width is what actually shapes your day. Across the mirrors this SUV runs close to 2,187 mm, wider than most bays are painted for, so a tight Marina tower ramp or an older mall's multi-storey means folding the mirrors in and taking the corner slowly. The flat, dead-straight sides at least make the edges easy to judge. Ground clearance of 241 mm shrugs off speed bumps and steep ramp lips without a scrape. The step-in is the last thing to plan for. Running boards help, but getting aboard is a genuine climb, worth a thought if you're lifting a small child in or arriving somewhere in heels.
Running cost is the honest catch, whatever colour you choose. The 100-litre tank takes premium only, and while the official combined figure sits near 14.7 litres per 100 km, real Dubai city driving with the AC working hard drags that into the high teens. Budget for regular stops rather than one fill a week. This rental includes 250 kilometres a day, then it's AED 0.5 for every kilometre over that, an allowance most renters won't get close to testing across a normal city week. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the booking come back to you as the renter, the same as on any other car in the fleet.
Black paint gives nothing back to a Dubai summer. Leave this G 63 parked through a mid-40s afternoon and the dark bodywork, plus all that upright glass, turns the cabin into a genuine oven within an hour or two. The first breath climbing back in is hot. What saves it is a strong climate system front and rear, with real vents feeding the second row rather than a faint trickle off the dash, so the cabin drops to comfortable within a couple of minutes of pulling away. Park in shade or a basement level when it's on offer, and that first uncomfortable stretch shortens further. As a luxury booking this one takes a refundable deposit, and you'll need to be at least 25 to take the keys, higher than the 21 some other G 63 rows in the fleet ask for.
Book this G 63 if the actual draw is the drive itself: the cold start, the turbo lag giving way to a hard V8 pull, and a shape that still turns heads on Sheikh Zayed Road without you doing anything except being in it. It rewards someone who wants to feel the mechanical parts working, not just be seen arriving in one.
Look elsewhere if what you want is comfort or value. A Mercedes GLS or a Range Rover rides softer, stays quieter at speed, drinks less fuel and swallows more luggage, which makes either the better choice for a family week or a long highway run toward Abu Dhabi. The 2021 G 63 was never built to be that car, and it doesn't pretend otherwise. Rent it for what happens between the cold start and the next set of lights, not for the ride in between, and it delivers exactly that.
