Rent Mercedes G63 2020 in Dubai

A Mercedes G 63 AMG 2020 is about as early as this generation of the G-Wagon gets in Dubai. The current shape, badge-coded W463A, arrived here in 2019, so this white 2020 sits close to the first year Mercedes sold the car it still builds today. The V8, the all-wheel-drive system and the three diff locks under a 2025 G 63 are the same hardware sitting under this bonnet, because Mercedes hasn't changed the mechanical layout since launch. We can have it at your door within one to two hours of booking. The real question here isn't whether an older plate gives anything up against a newer one under the skin. It's whether the terms attached to this particular row work for you.

An engine that hasn't been dialled back since 2019

Under the bonnet sits the same hand-built 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 Mercedes fits to every G 63 in this generation, assembled by a single AMG technician who signs the finished engine. It sends 585 hp and 850 Nm through a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels, and this 2020 car is the pre-facelift version, so there's no 48-volt system helping out low down the way the 2025 gets. Off the line you feel a short beat of turbo lag, then the V8 lands hard and pulls close to two and a half tonnes to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. That number matters less than what happens after it. A cold start cracks loud, and a firm push on an open stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road brings a deep V8 roar most cars at this price can't produce.

The trade-offs are the same ones every G 63 carries, whatever the plate year. Steering is slow and heavy, the tall body leans through bends, and past 120 the flat, upright front is visibly working against the wind. Underneath, permanent all-wheel drive, three locking differentials and a low-range gearbox make this a genuine off-roader, more capable in sand than any renter here actually needs. Nobody should point a hired G 63 at the dunes, and that's fine. The hardware exists for a different kind of owner.

The boot, the back seats and the width you'll actually feel

Inside, five seats sit upright with real space front and back, and the high driving position makes it easier to place this much metal in traffic than the exterior suggests. The boot holds 480 litres behind the rear seats, enough for two large cases and a soft bag off a flight, not three cases and a stroller as well. The tailgate is the one thing to plan around. It swings out sideways with the spare wheel bolted to it, so leave room behind the car before you try to open it in a tight bay.

Width is what actually catches drivers out, not length. Across the mirrors this G 63 measures close to 2.2 metres, wider than the lines painted for most SUVs, so a narrow multi-storey or an older residential car park means folding the mirrors in and taking the corner slowly. The flat, dead-straight sides at least make the edges easy to judge, and 241 mm of ground clearance turns speed bumps and steep mall ramps into non-events. Getting in is its own small task. The running boards help, but this is a climb into a high seat rather than a step, worth thinking about if young kids or anyone in heels is travelling with you.

What the tank and the AC both cost you

The 100-litre tank takes premium, and Mercedes quotes a combined figure near 14.7 litres per 100 km. Real Dubai driving, with the AC working hard and most trips short and stop-start, pushes that into the high teens, so plan on visiting the pump more often than the official number implies. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the booking come back to you as the renter, same as on every other car in the fleet.

White paint at least works in the car's favour once the sun gets involved. It reflects more heat than the black and grey G 63s in this class hold onto, so the panels stay a little cooler after a few hours parked in the open. That doesn't save the cabin, though. The G 63 is mostly tall glass, and glass turns a parked interior into a greenhouse whatever colour sits outside it. Climb back in after a long stretch in the sun and the first breath is still warm. What pulls it back is a climate system that's strong front and rear, with real vents reaching the second row, so the cabin drops to comfortable within a minute or two of pulling away rather than making you wait for it at the next light.

The renter this G-Wagon is built for, and the one it isn't

Your rental includes 250 kilometres a day, then it's AED 0.5 for every kilometre over that. As a luxury booking it takes a refundable deposit, and the minimum age to drive it is 25, higher than some of the other G 63 rows we run, so check that before you book if you're travelling with a younger group leader.

Book this 2020 if the V8, the noise and the shape are the actual reason you're renting an SUV, and you don't need the newest plate to get all three. Mechanically it gives up nothing to a 2025 beyond the smoother low-end assist and the updated screens, and for most renters that trade is an easy one to make. Skip it if you want a quieter, softer week of family driving instead. A Range Rover or a Mercedes GLS rides flatter over patched tarmac, drinks less at the pump and carries more without asking you to fold the mirrors in every time you park. The G 63 was never built to be the easy option, in 2020 or in any year since.
