On a Mercedes G 63 AMG 2025, a car built for a proper road trip rather than mall runs, that structure is worth more than the number suggests. Peak output holds at 585 hp and 850 Nm, sent through a nine-speed automatic and permanent all-wheel drive, and 100 km/h arrives in 4.4 seconds in a vehicle that weighs close to two and a half tonnes. None of that shows up in a photo. It shows up the first time you open the throttle on a clear stretch of road and the exhaust cracks on the way up.

Space, boot and the daily use

Five seats, all upright and roomy on head and shoulder space, and the boot behind them holds 480 litres, enough for two large cases and a couple of soft bags on an airport run. The tailgate swings out sideways with the spare wheel bolted to it rather than lifting up, so leave room to open it fully before you start loading.

Width is the number to respect day to day. The body itself is under two metres, but across the mirrors it runs close to 2.2 metres, and that is the figure that matters folding into a tight level in a Marina tower or a narrow multi-storey bay. Fold the mirrors in, take it slowly, and it fits, it just needs more room than a normal SUV. At 241 mm of ground clearance, speed bumps and mall ramps are a non-issue, and the flat, upright sides make the corners easy to judge once you are used to the size. The one thing photos never prepare people for is the step up into the cabin. Running boards help, but it is a genuine climb, worth knowing if you are loading small kids or arriving in heels.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

Real Dubai driving, stop-start traffic with the AC working hard, pushes that into the high teens, so on a longer road trip plan to stop for fuel more often than the tank size alone suggests. Park a black G 63 under the midday sun and the cabin heats up fast. The dark paint and the tall glass do not help. The recovery is quick once you are moving again. The climate system is strong front and rear, with proper vents for the back seats rather than a weak trickle off the dash, and it pulls the cabin temperature down within a couple of minutes of pulling away. Who this G-Wagon suits, and who this isn't for

Book the G 63 for a genuine road trip where the mileage allowance actually gets used, or for a week where the V8 and the silhouette matter as much as getting from A to B. It rewards distance rather than punishing it, which is not something you can say about most cars in this class.

If your priority is a smoother ride, better fuel economy and less width to manage in a car park, look at a Mercedes GLS or a Range Rover instead. Both cost less to feed and thread through tight spaces more easily, and neither one turns heads the way this does. The G 63 was never built to be the practical answer.
