The number is the least interesting part. Be just as honest about the rest of the drive. Steering is heavy and slow to answer, the tall body leans through bends, and past 120 km/h the flat, upright front is plainly fighting the air. Underneath sits a proper 4x4 setup, three locking differentials and a low-range gearbox, far more capability than any city booking will use. Nobody takes a hired G63 off pavement here, and that's fine. It was never rented for that job.

What fits inside, and what doesn't

Five seats sit upright with real head room front and back, and the driving position is tall enough to see over most of the traffic around you, which takes some of the nerve out of placing a car this wide through city lanes. Behind the rear seats there's 480 litres of boot, enough for two large cases and a duffel stacked on top after a flight in. A fourth adult travelling with a full set of luggage will find that snug rather than roomy. The tailgate is the habit worth learning early: it swings out sideways with the spare wheel bolted to it, rather than lifting up, so reverse into a spot that leaves room to open it fully.

Width is what actually governs your day. Across the mirrors this SUV runs close to 2,187 mm, tight enough in an older mall multi-storey or a Marina tower ramp that folding the mirrors in becomes routine rather than optional. Ground clearance of 241 mm works the other way, letting speed bumps and steep ramp lips pass under the car without a scrape. Getting in is the last thing to plan for. Even with the running boards fitted, it's a genuine step up into the cabin, worth a thought if you've got a small child to lift in or you're arriving somewhere in heels.

Black paint doesn't do this car any favours through a Dubai summer. Left in an open lot on a mid-40s afternoon, the dark bodywork and all that upright glass turn the cabin into a real oven, so the first breath climbing back in is warm and heavy. The recovery is fast once you're moving, though. The climate system is strong front and rear, with proper vents feeding the second row rather than a faint trickle off the dash, so the cabin drops to comfortable within a couple of minutes. Park in shade or on a basement level when you have the choice, and that first uncomfortable stretch shortens further.

The kilometre allowance, and where it can bite

This 2022 car runs on a different mileage structure than most SUVs in the fleet. Instead of a daily cap that resets every 24 hours whether you drive or not, you get 4,500 kilometres to use across the entire booking, one pool rather than a running total. For most weeks here that's genuinely generous. Hotel-to-meetings-to-dinner driving, even with a couple of DXB or DWC runs mixed in, rarely adds up to more than 700 or 800 kilometres over seven days, so the allowance should comfortably outlast a normal stay.

The cost sits on the other side of that line. Every kilometre past 4,500 adds AED 2.5 to the bill, a rate several times higher than the fifty fils per kilometre some other G63 bookings in our fleet charge once their daily allowance runs dry. Go 200 kilometres over and that's an extra AED 500. Go 500 over and it's AED 1,250, on top of the booking cost. That matters for a longer rental past two weeks, a daily commute to Sharjah or Abu Dhabi, or a Hatta day trip stacked onto normal city errands. Watch the odometer rather than finding out the total at drop-off.

Fuel is the other cost to budget separately. The 100-litre tank takes premium only, and while Mercedes quotes a combined 14.7 litres per 100 km, real Dubai city driving with the AC working hard pushes that into the high teens, so expect regular stops regardless of how much mileage allowance you have left. Salik tolls charge automatically as you pass under the gates, and any RTA fines issued during the rental come back to you as the renter. Being a luxury booking, it takes a refundable deposit, and the minimum age to drive it is 21.

The renter this 4,500 km deal suits, and who should pass

Rent the G63 AMG 2022 if presence is genuinely the point: the hand-built V8, the noise on a cold start, and a shape that dominates any valet line or hotel forecourt in the city. For a week of ordinary Dubai driving, the 4,500 kilometre allowance covers you without a second thought, and the running cost is simply the price of the reaction it gets every time you park.

Look elsewhere if your plans involve serious distance or a budget that can't absorb a surprise. A Mercedes GLS or a Range Rover rides softer, drinks less, and turns extra kilometres into a far smaller number on the final bill, which makes either the better choice for long highway stretches or repeated cross-emirate runs. The G63 was never built to be the sensible option. Stay inside the allowance, budget for the fuel, and it delivers exactly the arrival it's rented for.
