The Mercedes-AMG G63 2022 is one of the most genuinely capable off-roaders money can buy, with three locking differentials and the kind of clearance that shrugs off a desert track, and almost nobody who rents ours from us in Dubai ever leaves the tarmac. We deliver it to your door in one to two hours and rent it from age 18, and our honest view is that the gap between what this car can do and what you'll actually do with it is the whole story. You're paying for an icon and a 577 hp V8, not for dune-bashing. That's fine. Understood for what it is, the G63 is a superb week.

The off-road truth

On paper the G63 is a serious 4x4. Front, centre and rear locking differentials, around 238 mm of ground clearance, and a body engineered to climb. In practice, renters keep it on Sheikh Zayed Road, the Marina loop, and the school or restaurant run. The capability matters less for what you'll do with it and more for how it copes with Dubai's everyday obstacles: speed bumps, steep mall ramps, kerbs at villa entrances. Those it dismisses entirely, where lower SUVs scrape and wince.

If you genuinely want soft-sand dune driving, talk to us first about a vehicle prepared for it, because a pristine G63 on road tyres isn't the tool for serious off-roading despite the badge. For everything a normal Dubai week involves, the clearance is pure comfort.

The cabin and the space

Inside, the 2022 car still feels special. The materials are serious, the AMG seats are deeply bolstered, and the high, square-shouldered driving position gives you a commanding view of traffic. It's five seats, with two up front sitting tall and two adults genuinely comfortable across the rear bench, so it does dinner-with-friends as readily as it does show-off.

Luggage is better than the upright shape suggests. Mercedes quotes room for around six large bags with all five seats up, and a flat floor that takes far more with the rear seats folded. For a couple or a small family packing for the week, space isn't the limiting factor here.

Fuel and running it for a week

The 577 hp V8 is the headline, and the fuel use is the footnote you should read. Expect around 6 km/L in city driving and closer to 9 on the highway, which gives the 96-litre tank a combined range near 600 km. In real Dubai traffic with the AC working hard, plan on city figures and a few extra fill-ups across the week. That's the cost of the engine, not a flaw.

Size is the other consideration. At nearly 4.9 metres long and around 1.93 metres wide, the G63 wants a careful hand in older multi-storey bays and tight Marina ramps, even if the high seat and cameras make it manageable. You also cover Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental, and a child under four needs a child seat, which we can fit on request.

Heat and staying cool

Dubai summers punish a parked car, and the G63 is well set up for it. The climate system pulls a hot cabin down quickly, the front vents are strong, and rear passengers have their own outlets, so the back stays comfortable after a spell in the sun. For a tall cabin with a lot of glass, it cools faster than you'd expect, and a darker exterior colour won't leave the interior struggling.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the G63 2022 if you want the icon: the V8, the upright presence, a properly luxurious cabin, and genuine 4x4 hardware you'll mostly enjoy as bragging rights. With the wide colour range and the no-deposit option, it's an easy car to build a special week around, and it handles Dubai's roads and obstacles with total ease.

Skip it if you want cheap, efficient transport, because the fuel bill and the size in tight parking make a smaller SUV the rational pick. And if real dune driving is the plan, this isn't the vehicle for it.
