In practice almost every renter keeps it on tarmac, and that's the honest starting point for booking one. What it can do versus what you'll actually use

The off-road hardware is real. Locking diffs, low-range gearing and that tall clearance mean the G63 will climb, wade and crawl in a way few luxury SUVs can touch, and on a proper desert trip it earns its legend. Most rentals never test any of it. The week is valet stands, Sheikh Zayed Road and mall ramps, and that's fine, because the G63 is just as happy showing off as it is climbing a dune.

Where you do feel the capability every day is the commanding view out and the way 238 mm of clearance makes speed bumps, steep mall entrances and the odd kerb complete non-events. The engine you're really paying for

At the heart of the G63 is AMG's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, making 577 hp through a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels. The numbers are absurd for a two-tonne brick, with 0 to 100 km/h in around 4.5 seconds and a soundtrack that bounces off every wall in a multi-storey. On the open road it gathers speed in a way that makes people in far sportier-looking cars do a double-take.

What surprises first-timers is how usable that pace is. The throttle is sharp, the gearbox is quick, and overtaking is instant. The V8 is the reason this car costs what it does and the reason people remember the week they rented it. If the engine and the noise aren't the point for you, you're booking the wrong car.

Be clear-eyed about the running costs. A 577 hp V8 in a brick-shaped two-tonne SUV is thirsty, and the heat makes it worse. In city driving with the AC fighting 45 degrees you'll see the wrong side of 16 litres per 100 km, which is exactly why the tank is 100 litres. You'll fill it more often than anything else on our fleet, so factor a few extra stops into the budget. That's the cost of the experience, not a flaw.

It's also big and tall. At nearly 4.9 metres long and almost two metres wide, the G63 wants thought in tight Marina ramps and older multi-storey bays, and the squared body means you place the corners deliberately. The boot holds around 620 litres behind the seats, which sounds generous, but the load space is tall and upright rather than deep, so a four-adult airport haul is tighter than the size suggests. For a few cases and soft bags it's fine.

Heat and the Dubai realities

Cabin cooling is no problem. The climate system is powerful, the front vents are strong, and rear passengers get their own outlets, so the back stays cool even after the car bakes in the sun. Inside, the cabin matches the price, with twin widescreen displays, deeply bolstered AMG seats and materials as serious as the badge. Five seats, with the two up front sitting high and commanding and a rear bench that's genuinely comfortable for two adults.

On the costs that fall to you: Salik tolls are billed to the renter at each gantry, and any RTA fines during the rental come to you, which is worth remembering in a car that makes speed feel effortless and the cameras on the E11 never blink. Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the G63 2022 if you want the experience: the V8, the noise, the presence, and a week of turning heads, with the genuine off-road ability there if you ever want to use it. For a celebration, a shoot, or simply driving something extraordinary, nothing in the class delivers the same theatre, and it backs the looks with real speed and real capability.

Skip it if you just need practical family transport for the week, because the fuel bill, the size in tight parking and the upright boot all make a GLE or GLC the saner buy for the same job.
