We hand over the Mercedes E450 2022 across Dubai with 250 km a day built into the rental, so a few airport runs and a Hatta loop won't have you watching the odometer. This is the E-Class that swaps the four-cylinder's quiet competence for a 3.0-litre inline-six and EQ Boost, and the difference shows the moment you ask it to pass something on Sheikh Zayed Road. If you want the usual E-Class hush and comfort but with real muscle underneath, this is the version worth paying attention to. The rest of this page is about whether that extra pace is the upgrade you actually need.
The E350 is a fine car and most people never miss the power. The E450 is for the renter who does. Its turbocharged six makes 367 hp and 500 Nm, with a small electric boost from the mild-hybrid system smoothing the gaps, and the result is overtaking that happens without drama or downshifting theatre. You squeeze the throttle on the E11 and the car simply gathers speed, already in the right gear, the nine-speed slurring between ratios so quietly you stop noticing it.
That's the whole argument for this trim. It isn't a sports car and it doesn't pretend to be. The suspension is tuned for cruising comfort first, the steering is light and unbothered, and the cabin stays calm at speeds where smaller cars start to feel busy. What you're buying is effortless pace layered on top of a luxury cruiser, not lap times.

This is where the E450 earns its keep. On a long pull up the E11 toward Abu Dhabi, or merging into fast-moving traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, the six-cylinder gives you a reserve of pace that makes the whole drive less tense. You're never waiting for the engine to wake up. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive keeps it planted through quick lane changes, and at a steady 120 the cabin is hushed enough to hold a phone call without raising your voice.
A word on the rules, since the fines land on you. Salik tolls and any RTA speed-camera penalties pass to the renter, and the enforcement here is strict and automated, so the muscle this car has is best enjoyed inside the limit. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat.
This E450 is the convertible, which changes the summer maths. With the roof up it seals tight and the climate system pulls a parked cabin down from the high 40s quickly enough, the vents strong and the four-seat space small enough to cool fast. Drop the roof and physics takes over: in July midday sun, open-top driving is a short-burst pleasure, fine for an early Marina cruise or an evening run, punishing at 2pm. Park in shade where you can, because a black car with the top down bakes in minutes. Plan the roof-down time for mornings and after sunset and the car makes far more sense.
Four seats, and that's the honest limit. The rear two are usable for adults on shorter hops but tighter than the E-Class sedan, and there's no fifth belt, so a group of five should look elsewhere. The boot runs from 310 to 385 litres depending on whether the roof is stowed, which is the catch worth knowing: drop the top and luggage space shrinks. Roof up, you'll fit a large case and a couple of soft bags for a DXB or DWC airport run. Roof down with two big hard cases, it gets tight. For a couple with weekend bags it's comfortable; for a full luggage load plus passengers, size up.
The 66-litre tank and a combined figure around 8.7 to 8.9 L/100km give a theoretical range near 750 km, but treat that as a best case. Dubai's stop-start traffic, constant AC load and the way the six rewards a heavy foot push real-world consumption higher, so plan on more frequent fills than the four-cylinder E350 would need. Over a week of city driving you'll visit the pump more than once. This is the honest trade for the extra power, and if low running cost is your priority, the E350 is the smarter rent.
At nearly 4.85 metres long it's a full-size car, and the modest ground clearance means you take Marina ramps and speed bumps at a crawl, especially with the roof's weight low in the body. Multi-storey bays and tight U-turns ask for a bit of care, though the parking sensors and camera do the heavy lifting. Once you're out on the open road none of that matters; this car is happiest with space ahead of it, not threading a packed mall car park.
Rent the E450 if you want a genuinely quick luxury cruiser with the drama of a drop-top and the pace to overtake without thinking, ideally for two people who'll spend more time on open highway than in traffic. It's the upgrade pick over the E350 specifically for that effortless six-cylinder shove. Skip it if you're counting fuel stops, since the E350 does the comfort just as well for less at the pump, or if you need four real seats and a proper boot, in which case an E-Class sedan or a luxury SUV will serve you better. For the right driver, though, the inline-six makes this the E-Class worth the step up.
