We rent the Mercedes C300 2020 in black, and it is worth knowing straight away that this is the two-door Cabriolet, not the four-door C-Class sedan sharing the same name elsewhere on our fleet. Mercedes kept building this drop-top on the older C-Class platform even after the sedan changed shape, so what turns up at your door within one to two hours is a proper folding-roof car, smaller and sharper than the E450 Cabriolet we also carry. Same badge, same open-top idea, a size down. If the E450 feels like more car than two people need for a weekend, this C300 makes the same case for less bulk and a lower rate.

The turbo four and EQ Boost, and how it drives

A 2.0-litre turbocharged four sits under that long bonnet, helped along by Mercedes' EQ Boost mild hybrid system, tuned to 258 hp and 370 Nm and sent to the rear wheels through a 9-speed automatic. It is the same drivetrain the C-Class sedan uses, so nothing about the smaller convertible body costs you power. Mercedes did build a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive version of this Cabriolet, but this row is rear-wheel drive only, and on Dubai's flat, dry roads you will not notice the difference.

0 to 100 km/h takes 6.2 seconds, quick enough to merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road with room to spare, and the car is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The fabric roof folds or raises in under 20 seconds and can do it on the move at up to 50 km/h, so a light changing mid-manoeuvre will not catch you out. Where the E450 leans toward a long, calm cruise, this C300 feels a step keener through the same motions, the smaller, lighter car that reacts a beat faster.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

This is a 2+2, four seats, not the five a generic listing might suggest. Two adults sit up front properly. The rear pair works for kids, bags, or a short hop for a smaller adult, but a tall passenger behind a tall driver runs out of headroom under the folded roof fast, and climbing back there past a tipped-forward seat is not graceful. Compare that with the E450 Cabriolet, which gives its rear pair genuinely more room, and the trade this C300 makes is clear: less back-seat comfort in exchange for a tighter, more eager car up front.
